Steering / suspension noise

Hi guys,

I have recently come across an issue with the car, a noise coming from both steering wheel and when going over bumps.
I spoke with the trader I bought the car from, as it was still under the 30 days warranty and they refuse to sort it out as they insist this is a normal noise, and I quote: "I am sorry to say, that they all report that it is normal – it is simply the steering hitting the stop blocks at the end of the steering rack , it is common on many cars"
I have checked the car with two different garages, they say it's something to do with suspension (don't know the part, exactly) which needs to be replaced.
I have attached a link to the VIDEO with the noise made when moving the steering wheel from one side to the other.
Please let me know if you came across similar issue and what was the problem causing it.
Thank you.

There's definitely a play in a suspension component...

I'm guessing bushing worn out or the strut is loose.

I just had my driver side front strut replaced for a knock/clunk over smaller bumps at low speed. The strut was leaking.

Hmm... thats really odd considering you're barely turning the wheel! Does it progressively get harder to turn? Does it keep making a knocking sound as you turn the wheel? My bet is a bushing or maybe even the steering rack... I'd take it in to a dealer for the best diagnosis.

Good luck!

BMW dealers are worst than GPs in UK. There are waiting queues of 3-4 weeks.
Anyway, the noise is only when moving it like that or going over speed bumps (or any other bumps).
It doesn't get harder when turning it nor making any other sound.
Cheers.

Ok, got it back from the local garage, the conclusion is that I need the steering rack replaced as it's got excessive play in steering rack unit (among the tire rods, which also need to be replaced).
So frustrating, for a 3 years old car, under 60k miles, serviced with BMW dealership - the warranty with them expired in september, btw.

Try to get BMW to goodwill replace them since your warranty just expired and these cars have really bulletproof suspension. Mine is at 152 thousand km and I've done long dirt road trips and everything is tight.

Maybe in Canada, these guys in UK don't give a damn about you and the car.
On this website specialized in reviews, bmw.co.uk has one star out of five so what do you think my chances are?

Slim, but worth a shot.

What I'd do is take it to the dealer you have some relationship with and try.

And email BMW UK directly with your case. Both fronts could help. It's worth a shot, that's an expensive repair.

excess gearlash in rack
i was going to ask does it also drift L or R slightly ?

The thing about asking / pleading your case for a fix . . . .
THE worst they can do is say no you got nothin to loose.
