Turbo Failure - DriveTrain Malfunction

Hoping for some advice here... I've got a 2013 X3 328i with 119K miles.

A few months ago, I started to get a DriveTrain malfunction that would so up whenever I accelerated quickly or sped up step inclines. Most of the time, the car's performance wouldn't change. On occasion, the powertrain power output would be limited. I'd pull over, reset the codes or even just restart the car, and be on my way with full power again.

I finally took the car into a local mechanic. They ended up replacing the valve cover and eccentric shaft in addition to replacing the drive belt.

After taking back possession of the car, I immediately started having more issues than ever before. The turbo wouldn't engage after about 10 miles driven, and i started to get low engine oil pressure.

I took it back to the mechanic and they re-ran their diagnostics and ended up replacing all the vaccuum hoses. They later decided that in lieu of not finding anything else wrong with the car for why the turbo wouldn't turn back on, the turbo needed replacement.

I find it hard to believe that my turbo went from 90% working before the original inspection to a complete dud now.

What should I do next? Get a second opinion or try and diagnose reasons why the Turbo won't even turn on or engage now at all? My car is driving on what feels like 80 horsepower now without the turbo working.

Unfortunately this is not enough information to really provide direction.

The codes will tell more of the story. The 2013 turbo is vacuum actuated so could be turbo, vacuum, etc.

Why replace the valve cover & eccentric shaft - what drove them to that decision.

Also, equally concerning is the low oil pressure - which is a predictor of a timing chain/guide failure that is imminent.

Really codes are essential to diagnose.

Who is the "local mechanic." Is he a BMW/german specialist or a guy who works on Fords and Hondas 90% of the time. Sounds like he's guessing. But as said above, are you aware of the 2013 28i timing belt issue? If the guides break, you need a new engine.

Welcome to the forum...
What output pressure is the turbo that you say it "won't even turn on or engage"?
You could have timing chain issues so I wouldn't drive it until properly diagnosed since you could destroy the engine if the timing system is failing, which is a known problem with that year N20 engine. Take it to someone that specializes in BMW for a 2nd opinion.
BTW, AFAIK, the X3 model should be 28i not 328i...
