Good point. Has Mission confirmed this feat? It's a game changer If they really can create the blast, with a tune, at 17-1800 rpm.

Did anyone know off hand the turbine wheel diameter differences between the S55 and the S58?

Nice!

What tuning platform are you guys using?

Also, with full E85, is the stock fuel system sufficient?

These turbos will never spool at 1800. Even if they did, you would be looking for a new block relatively quickly. Full boost is around 3K rpm.

We use mFlasher, our own platform that has been around for ages now. The stock fuel system is sufficient for full E85 at 650whp relatively responsibly. Its possible to go to 700whp on full E85, but that is not safe as you are running way too much advance.

BMW has been using same style injectors between Brazil (full E85 Flex vehicles) and USA spec F30s and those injectors were designed to run both fuels. Same concept carries over to B58 and S58, only B58 has single HPFP and not enough fuel flow to give safe power on full E85.

Let's say 3 months down the road, I get upgraded turbos, how much data logging do I need to do for you to upgrade a new map?

I am so happy to have hitched my wagon to the Mission Performance horse many times over the years. Alex's approach to responsible tuning while evoking safe max performance from BMW engines (and trannys) is something to be celebrated.

As I've said before there is a reason that Toyota global flew him out to work on the programming of their very own TRD Supra that was going to be on the world stage - with the pick of any tuner in the world they tapped Alex on the shoulder.

Not taking anything away from any other tuner - I love the back and forth between them and the innovation that results - however Alex is simply a master of his craft

ps- cool fact you can pick up the phone and call Alex or visit him in SoCal!

disclaimer: Huge MP fan here :-) but for very good reason

I don’t have times yet as I just got the tune and wanted to make sure it was running well... and well it really is, very quick. Dragy times will be coming soon despite shit DA and summer weather 😂

Thanks for the insight as to the boost control strategies in shifts.

I've been quite closely monitoring turbo lag with the S58 and found out for ourselves from real world dragy pulls and datalogs that the shifting isn't really holding it back. There is actually very little to gain in keeping high WG duty in shifts for this specific application.

What's critical is really the off boost lag. Or to be more precise, the S58 is basically a very dead engine from off boost - dropping 3 gears to 5k rpm and it still takes a long pause to really take off.

What it really needs is a little off boost "readiness" to be enabled by the corresponding wastegate strategy. However, it's easier said than done from a tuning perspective.

From the look of it now, the S58 seems to just source the big power/potential from the two laggy big turbos.

From the earlier post it looks like the B58 tunes has much better low end torque and gives up just a little up top. For every day drivability, it seems like a no brainer

I’ve owned both. b58 is great as daily driver. s58 is more fun and visceral and it’s quick af.

I was referring to the tuned dyno graph. Looks like 50 HP in the S58's favor up top but otherwise it's down a mountain down low. I already notice too much lag in the S55 when you catch it off boost. It appears worse in the S58. I hope the M3 lower weight hides some of that lag.

The transmission does a great job keeping the rpms high. There is no lag whatsoever when you roll in Sport or Sport Plus. You only feel some lag during city traffic with frequent stops.
