Whether the new idrive is better or not, personally it would piss me off to get a new 2020 car for the idrive to become outdated 2 months later when the technology was available in the first place.
Usually has to do with supply chain management of parts or software/hardware testing not always lining up with the desired release of vehicle upgrades (LCI, face lift, etc). For example, my early build '17 F80 M3 came with ID5, but late '17 or early '18 models came with ID6. IIRC, ID6 came on new vehicles in a short 9 month window or so, as a stop-gap between ID4 and ID6. However, the ID5 hardware was the same as ID6, so those with ID5 could easily code to the new ID6 interface - which I did.

Now why BMW was not ready to jump straight to ID6 software from ID4 even though the hardware was ready to go seems like either poor planning or bad luck with testing....

I ordered a 2019 X3 M40i because I liked ID6 better than ID7. Turns out I missed a 2019 order by a week so I had to get a 2020 w ID7. Very, very happy to have ID7. There is some customization via bimmercode (Alpina display is peachy). Besides, who ever looks at the center display anyway? I use the HUD and the nav display w/ Waze on it. All the instrument cluster serves is to show me how much gas I have and what song is playing.

I guess the X3M gets the M8 display on this version.

I'm currently in a loaner x3 30i and it has the new "tech" and I'm at not feeling it at all. Unless they can kind of replicate what's in the m8 it's gonna be a hard pass for me. Will stick with my current x3m
Don't think anybody expected you to upgrade because of this :-)
Meaning when my current lease is up if I wanted to go with another x3 x4m

This is why you never buy a first wave/first year ///M cars or trucks.
Learned it hard way back in 2001 and 2008 with my M3s.

Agree 100 percent. Could not say this any better.

I'm purposely not waiting because of the "update." Had 330 loaner a while back and I'm not a fan of the new MPH/Tach gauges like many others. I'm also 45 so I'm guessing that has something to do with it/change and all.

I wouldn't look at the map on the cluster anyway. That's what the HUD is for IMO when I actually use the turn by turn nav directions.

Meh

Having a 2018 X3 M40i (hers) and my 2020 X3M, I like that they have the same interface. I had a loaner X3 for a day, with the new "backward" tach and updated iDrive. It was different and to me not a improvement but just different. Not horrible but I prefer a traditional looking tach.

I'm sure its nice once you have it but having a common interface is better for me.

I just like to buy the newest model. Anyway, you'll never be able to keep up with all the yearly updates. Two things would really piss me off if they came with the 21' model; a performance increase the way they did it with X3 M40i or a full Merino leather interior.

Its weird that BMW of all brands, one thats considered a pioneer of automotive tech, sometimes just can't get the little things right, like the digital gauges.

This exists these day's (Active Sound on, toned down or off).

It's in the lowly M135i and I assume M235i. I'd expect to see it across the ranges with each update now.

I haven't followed BMW for a few years prior to getting the X3M last month. Missed out on ID7, but eh, doesn't matter to me. I still enjoy the current iDrive setup as it was when I had a F80..

I'd settle on screen share if they allowed it to be used while in motion. Maybe there's a way to code it.

It's ok I guess. None of my cars have android auto except my wifes . Hell, 80K car with 30 cameras and I can't even get remote start either.
