Hesitation/Sputter/Drivetrain Malfunction
Hello,
I have a 2012 X3 28i and have the following issue: When I accelerate, my car bogs/hesitates to get into the next gear, suffers a drop in power, and sputters. If I continue trying to accelerate, I get the Drivetrain Malfunction error. But, if I ease my driving, I don't get the warning, but my car still has power loss and sputters (like coughing). I took it to my mechanic and he replaced a coil and it drove smoothly but now it's doing the same thing. What is the issue causing this problem so I can have him look it over? Thanks in advance Last edited by hooplucas; 02-04-2022 at 10:42 AM.. |

I am assuming other coils are going bad too? I would take the car back to your mechanic to read the codes and see what comes up.
Not too sure how well the coils last on these cars but on older BMWs we changed all the coils even if 1 went bad. The train of thought is that if one coil is going bad, the others are not too far behind. How many miles does your car have? When is the last time the spark plugs were replaced? |

Yes….how many miles? I started getting a hard shift and then drivetrain malfunction. After turning the car off all would e fine for a bit until I started really getting on it under load…then I would get hesitation again. I read a lot of forums and with many threads here, I changed my Transfer case fluid, recalibrated and then changed my transmission fluid, only a transmission drain and fill, NOT a flush. I reset the trans adaptions along with the transfer case and all has been fine since….I have a ‘11 x28i with 158K. I did all the work 2k miles ago, no problems

With 81K, you need to drain and fill trans fluid (NOT A FLUSH)…it will make a big difference, as well as the transfer case, and while you’re there, might as well do the front and rear differential fluid….all in all, it takes a 2-3 hours…..makes a world of difference

I wonder if you are getting Misfires. I would look at replacing the rest of the soil packs. When one of mine failed last year, i just replaced all 6 as a set. I usually do the same with teh spark plugs too. My two cents. Let us know what happened.
