My wife's 2022 LCI X3MC ZDM in BG/Blk was delivered over the weekend. Although she really liked her 2020 X3MC PB/Blk, it was purchased with a pano off a Dealer's lot. As we never use that it's useless weight on top, and over the nearly 2 years of ownership it was surprising to us how much it seemed to change the handling c/w my X3MC w/o pano (as they were otherwise identical builds). So this time we custom-ordered w/o a pano thanks to BMWNA's new option for the US market – 'ZDM', which provides simple pano-delete capability. Previously one could only order a slick top by ordering the M Driver's Pkg (which also deletes the speed limiter).

It is Brooklyn Grey Met 'C4P' with pretty much everything - Exec 'ZPX', Driving Assist Pro Pkg 'ZDY', Comp Pkg 'ZCP', M Comp Pkg '7MN', Remote Eng Start '1CR', Mobility Kit (so she doesn't have the heavy spare) '2VC', and Front Vent Seats '4FH' with Blk Extended Merino Leather 'LKSW'. I removed the Competition badge from the back, changed out the rear wiper to IND-Distribution's gloss black painted version (which really cleans up the look), and blacked out all of the 'X3M' chrome lettering on the front grill and sides.

Compared to my 2020 X3MC without pano, it reminds us of the difference we felt when we moved from our F25 X3 35i to the LCI F25 X3 35i – just a sense that everything has had time to mature and provide an overall improved experience. Pulls from starts are stronger - whether that is from the claimed increase in torque or just programming, they clearly have listened to Enthusiasts who expected more off the line. The transition from iD6 to iD7 (our first experience with it) was seamless and intuitive. Although we're partial to the analog gauge appearance in the pre-LCI, honestly so little of one's focus is down at the cluster that I really don't even notice the change. And to be fair, the new software does offer so much more information capability that it is a worthwhile upgrade even if one loses the analog look.

Some comments have been made about the rear light appearance, and although I admit to preferring the pre-LCI's version, I spent considerable time comparing the aerodynamic lines of the rear and front and there is no doubt that wind tunnel testing and CFD have refined the airflow. Would be an interesting interview if someone could get the M Aero Design team to discuss how the changes affect drag, lift and downforce.

Took an extended drive yesterday so got some good seat time and have to say it is an improved version. To what extent becomes very subjective, and since I have my 2020 exactly like I want it now with the roof rail deletion I don't feel a need to jump up to the LCI at this time. But for my wife who definitely wanted to get rid of the pano, 'ZDM' allowed a perfect opportunity for her to upgrade.

Although I don't want to appear greedy, now if BMWNA would allow roof rail delete option with full painted roof and side windshield trim like the F96, I'd be tempted to trade mine in. And if they offered CFRP aero roof along with that, sign me up for an allocation…
The acceleration is quicker without the moonroof?

I don't get it either . I personally love those lights specially at night. if there was a conversion i could do on my 2020 X3M i would totally do it

I prefer the Pre-LCI tail lights as well as some other exterior cosmetic pieces but the overall package is nice. If I didn't have a 21, I would snag a 22. The one thing that bugs me most with the LCI is the rear black trim, I would color match that immediately. Everything else is just adapting to something new and accepting modern design changes.

I wouldn't give my 21 up for a 22 but I am getting closer and closer to giving my 21 up for a pig-nose G80. I went from being repulsed by the G80 to really liking the aggressive style.

There is, someone from China has a thread about it. I'm sure someone remember it and will post.

I kept it in Sport and Sport+ during my extended drive of about 150 miles, varying throttle often. There seems to be a difference in takeoff c/w our two pre-LCI models. More immediate, even with proper throttle application as we always use. So perhaps M has adjusted something. Whether it is just programming, or the supposed increased torque, too early for me to say. And obviously haven't done LC yet but looking forward to trying it.

More weight for the same construct equals less acceleration. That is a law of Physics, but whether it translates to real world data it’s too early. The other variable will be the lighter weight 892M wheels which will provide decreased rotational and unsprung mass, so I don’t see any way to sort that out unless two similar builds have the different wheels, and that would require rigorous testing to be valid. Point is - if you never use the pano then why have that extra weight up top? If you have a family and the children enjoy looking at the sky while you drive then by all means.

Congrats to the @Max Well household. Your LCI X3M looks really good in BG along with the newly available 21 inch M forged star spoke wheels. I'm going to be curious for additional comments you may have regarding the new engine tune and enhancements. Enjoy those miles!

After seeing this in Brooklyn Grey I'm on the fence as I was going to order mine with this color. I simply do not like the look of the deleted pano w/out the CF roof. The LCI looks great overall though…..now time to think on a different color; ugh

Many thanks, ando - appreciate it!

-------

I've had some questions via PM so thought I'd clarify some of them:

Rear Wiper installation - how to and is it difficult?
Appreciation goes to Dobie Dog for bringing it up in his build thread and giving some of us the idea. Here are three links to specific posts in his thread that clarifies how easy it is to do:
https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showp...2&postcount=67
https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showp...1&postcount=69
https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showp...0&postcount=70

Blacking out the chrome badge lettering on the grill and sides- how did you do it?:
sayemthree has an entire thread in which various methods were discussed as some of us felt that the chrome should've actually been blacked-out (at least on the Competition version) to match how they appear elsewhere in the vehicle. Plus the black seems to give a more aggressive aesthetic. I explained in the following two post links how I did it using an oil paint marker. Inexpensive, takes about 10-15', and I've been impressed how well it has held up over all these months (edit - adding image of the current LCI chrome blacking-out for the PM questions):
https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showp...1&postcount=25
https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showp...6&postcount=35

Where can we get the good license plate bracket?
In the link to the whole thread about the paint damage issue with the poorly-designed license plate bracket which I shared above, it was post#9 where j080808 was the one who found the good one many of us are using:

Thought I'd take a few images in the dark to show how the lights look with and without the brakes applied (hard to get the resolution and lighting right with a cell phone but at least the pattern shows how they appear).

Assuming my dealer wasn't lying about availability, I should be getting mine either later this week or next.

Wish I had thought to ask the Dealership to weigh the wheels as they were changing out the tires - would've been a perfect chance to compare. I don't recall seeing official weights of our 892Ms - just that they are lighter. If anyone is planning on changing their tires and can weigh them it'd be great for documentation.

Took this image of the DRLs during an early AM car wash today.
