Cornering Lights - Not what I expected? 2021 M40i

Cornering Lights were a wonderful thing on my old 1993 Maxima SE. Simply engage the turn signal and light up one side of the road, at any speed.

None of my cars have had this feature since, so I looked forward to it on my Icon Adaptive LEDs.. however, they don't work as expected.

The only time I've seen my M40i's cornering lights illuminate is when stopped, turn signal engaged and wheel fully turned. I've never gotten them to work while driving, at any speed.

Am I doing something wrong?
Your feedback is appreciated!!

I have the adaptive led’s, not icons, cornering lights come when I turn the wheel past a certain threshold and only on low beam. I’d love it if they came on with turn signals and with high beams as I live in a dark neighborhood. Tried coding fogs with high beams, not enough though...

They work for me on twisty UK roads. The lighting pattern also changes according to traffic so maybe it’s harder to spot. Or is this again US regs changing the way these things are allowed to work?

Thanks guys...
Brett, you said 'only on low beam' and now that's something I need to test, as I've only had the X3 a few days and have been using auto high-beams.. maybe they'll operate differently on low beams. I'll post a follow up soon.

The cornering lights on my car regularly light up in my neighborhood when I make fairly sharp 90 degree turns. They don't activate if I make a shallow turn (i.e., small steering wheel angle) or when I have high beams or high-beam assistant on. They activate irrespective of whether I use a turn signal or not. As best as I can tell, they are activated when the steering wheel reaches a critical angle. I believe I saw the coding values that define the critical angle in BDC_BODY or some other ECU when I was looking at the various coding parameters last year.

Not that specific. Nothing about low or high beam dependence. I can see them on, didn't really paid attention as to when they are on.

Hmm, this doesn't sound right at all. My cornering lights turn on when I turn the wheel to even a 45 degree turn, not just for a sharp turn (in which it's already on) like what a previous post mentioned. Also, it works when I'm driving or stopped.

I’d love to understand if there are some coding options on this. I’d like the turn angle to be less, activate with signals, activate on high beam and lastly come on when in reverse. F25 lit the fog lights up in reverse, was a nice feature.

Take a look at the attached file. It shows all the codeable items in BDC_BODY. I've highlighted the items related to cornering lights in yellow. They are located under 3531 LaMaster2, FC. (I am not saying that I got all of them; there may be others that I missed). Perhaps coding
  • C_CLC_BLINK_ENA (Kommentar=Switch to enable CLC on TurnIndicator (permanent blinking only)) to enable [01]
  • C_CLC_REV_ENA (Kommentar=Switch to enable CLC on Reverse Gear) to enable [01]
  • C_CLC_HIGHBEAM_DIS (Kommentar=Switch to disable the CLC when high beam is on) to [00]

will get you what you want. LaMaster2 also includes other items that seem to be related to the speed at which the cornering lights activate/deactivate. I was not able to find the angles at the which the cornering lights light up. Maybe I saw them in another ECU. If you experiment with the settings above, I recommend that you change one at a time and test to see if it had the expected effect.

Wow! That’s quite the spreadsheet, thank you for sending it out!! Do you by chance know the acronyms used for foglights (for reversing too?)

Fogs = NSW (Nebelscheinwerfer). I don't know about reverse lights, but my guess would be RFS (Rueckfahrlicht).

I believe the cornering light is different to the 'adaptive' LED. The cornering light is a separate bulb, or cluster of bulbs, within the headlamp, and just switches on when you're below a certain speed, and the wheel is turned and (I think) the indicator has to be on. It doesn't have any 'steering' or movement. My older BMW E90 used the inner of the two 'headlights' to do the cornering light IIRC

The adaptive headlights do the movement of light pattern all other times (eg highway, auto dipping, etc) and are much more 'intelligent'...

If you have Adaptive LEDs you should have cornering lights. At night with low beams on if you're driving around in a neighborhood and making turns you will see them turn on to left and right. Fairly obvious. Kind have to look toward the ground, not so much off in the distance.

I just checked. You don't even have to drive. Park you're car next to the wall a turn the wheel to the very far right/left. You should see them being on - on the wall and also in the cluster.

Interesting. I never noticed any indication in the instrument cluster that the cornering lights are on. What cluster do you have? The fully digital one (6WB) or the older analog/digital hybrid?

Eh? All in the BMW's F15, F34, F01, G05, G30 - I've owned with cornering lights - there has never been a cornering light indicator in the instrument cluster.

Majority of the time the cornering lights don't stay on long enough to require an indicator.

I meant light cluster Sorry for confusion.

So I did this via bimmercode expert mode, works great (haven’t done reverse yet) but Cornering lights with high beams and turn signals now work. Nice addition! Thank you for the notes and spreadsheet!!

Thanks Gugin and Brettl.

I also want to enable my fogs with high beams. Wish I didn't have to turn on fogs every time I start the car.

I have Bimmercode (basic?) and a dongle but haven't used it yet. Are these expert-mode changes something that can be undone using a Bimmercode 'backup?

Meantime I can confirm that my M40i cornering lights illuminate without touching the turn signal, but not until I'm halfway through the turn. Maybe someday a tweak will appear for this.

Foglights with high beams can be done with the normal bimmercode interface. Sounds like your cornering lights are working correctly now. The functionality changes I made were made in expert mode. I was pretty nervous the first time using bimmercode, used the demo mode a couple times before actually plugging in to the car. I’ve only delved into expert mode a couple times using specific coding I read about on this forum. To answer your question, yes, you can undo your expert mode coding using backups, just keep track of what you did when as it only provides a date and time stamp. The cornering light changes I made are nice, you can activate them earlier by using your turn signals meaning you don’t have to reach a certain degree of turn for them to activate, though the do only activate under a certain speed, even with the turn signals (permanent signals). Ability for them to come on with high beams is really nice too, my neighborhood is quite dark...
