maybe a stupid question about F97 designation?
I havent kept up with all the designations since they left e! owned a E30, 5 e36's a e46. a e92, 3, e83's, a e84 ( for sale) and a few 5 series ( e60 and e39, wifes 5 wagons) oh and one f something x3. callme old school ?
why is the 2020 X3 called G01 (2018 plus) when the M version X3M is called f97 ? didn't the M come out later (2020 plus) ? for sale 2014 BMW X1 xDr2.8i 64k mi. LeMans Blue/Sand Beige WARRANTY Price DROP!!!!

For whatever reason, the M cars have still been getting the F designation. The new 5 series is the G30, but the M5 is still an F90. Same with the M8, it's based off the G15 8-Series, but it is designated as the F91.

I always thought they went in numerical order. But I guess the model designation ( 3.0 etc) no longer matches displacement. So up is down and down is up

It's worth remembering that those are internal designations, not really for public consumption, so they don't need to have any obvious logic. I'm sure somewhere in the engineering dept they all make perfect sense.

M cars started to get separate chassis designations with the F80/2/3 M3/4 in 2014 since then all M cars have been given an F designation M2 F87, M5 F90, M8 F91/2, XM5/6 F95/6 and X3/4M F97/8
