It's a good resolution in contrast to waiting 6-8 weeks after production only to discover that the order is incorrect.

Production codes
1100 Scheduled
1200 Scheduled for Production - Last chance for changes.

5000 Confirmed for Production
5050 Chassis Number Allocated
5055 Confirmed by Production Control - VIN number is usually available.

5100 Bodyshop Start
5190 Bodyshop Complete
5200 Paintshop Start
5260/5270 Paintshop Complete
5300 Pre-Assembly Start
5400 Assembly Start
5500 Assembly Complete - Look up the vin number.

6000 Transfer to Distribution
8200 Released to Carrier
9000 Departed Plant
9605 Pre EU port of exit.
9610/20/30/40/50/60 In Transit
9615/35/45 In Storage
9620 At sea
9630 Port of Entry
9650 Awaiting Dispatch to Dealer
9660 Dispatched to BMW Dealership
9800 Arrived Dealer
This is great information- thank you.

I remember my salesman said the same - once the build slot is taken there are no more changes.

I wonder if that remains true if there was an error like the OP’s order?

I’ll have to read the thread again to see if stated but I’m not sure if the error was at the dealer or production.

The OPs car was a stock car - not a factory order. So the mistake would have been in the selection from a list or the accuracy of the list....

Don't compromise especially for something like the color. I'd rather pay slightly more for the spec I want than pay slightly less for something I don't want. You are going to regret it every time you drive the car.

Would you pay £23k more to order your own spec, rather than compromise on a stock car?

As I wrote above, once the spec is locked at status 5,000 and a mistake is detected, the dealer will take delivery of the car and sell it as inventory but offer you the next spec-amendable build slot. This usually means a 2-4 week delivery delay which is not bad.
