Hi I'm about to swap over to my first set of winter wheels and I'm looking for som guidance on where to place the axel stands. I have got a big trolly jack and the bmw adaptor for the jacking points but also wanted to put some stands under the car for security as I never trust just the jack.

Looking under the car there is so much plastic cowling I'm not sure where to put them front and back.

Has anyone done this? Any ideas appreciated!

Also does anyone know the correct torque for the wheel bolts?

Thanks in advance!

In my 3 series i put the stands under the sub frame mounts, these are really the only structural metal parts you can see on these modern cars with all the plastic cowlings.

I don't use stands when just changing wheels though, they're only really necessary when doing work under the car or on the brakes/suspension.

140nm for wheel bolts.

Is it just me or is 140Nm (about 105 ft-lb) of torque a LOT?

My torque wrench did not go that high and I bought another.

Then, when I was tightening the lugs, I was amazed that they did not shatter.

That is a LOT of torque on those little lug threads!

Definitely correct, has been 140nm since Fxx generation. The suspension camber arm bolts are 165nm!

105 ft-lb is not really out of line for a passenger vehicle. I have a couple vehicles with lugs spec'd for 120 ft-lb and a typical 1/2-18" torque wrench should go to 150 ft-lb or so. My tractor wheel lugs are 160 ft-lb. and that requires a 1/2-24" torque wrench.
