382 Horsepower and 369 Lb/Ft with 48 volt Hybrid booster motor. BMW is notorious for lying about their numbers. Some one here said the engine really puts out over 430 Horsepower and almost 400 Lb/Ft Torque. I think the 400 mark is a threshold with insurance companies on what is considered a muscle car = even higher insurance.

4.4 sec 0-60 M40i

7.7 sec 0-60 30i (according to Consumer Reports)

When I drove the 4 Cylinder it felt under powered off the line, but once underway the turbo kicked in and seemed decent. Their tuning reminds me a lot of SAAB. They retard power in first and second...once in third, you're off!!

I can tell you from owning prior 6 second cars (TLX, GL450) that my 30i is no worse than a 6 second car and definitely nowhere close to 8!

Do you have the CR 0-60 number for the M40i?

As of now, there are no X3 owners w/iDrive 8 straight from the factory.

we own a 30i as well in the family... it is significantly faster than 7.7 to 60 by feel alone... most mags put it at 6-6.5 seconds....

7.7 is REALLY slow and you'd feel that immediately... drive a 4runner if you want to feel 7.7 LOL... altho when I drove a 4runner, i wanted to drive it off a cliff based on how bad everything felt there

I’m not sure where CR gets their 0-60 numbers. Are they pulling a trailer filled with horses? Is Captain Slow doing the tests? I’ve seen some odd ones on other cars too. That time is as bad as my Mercedes ML430 from 20 years ago.

I like CR for the reliability reports but pretty much disregard their road test reviews and performance numbers.

Yeah, I tend to stick to appliance reviews for CR. Car reviews? Not so much!

Thread title cracks up me up.

Does M40i much faster than 30i?
Yes it does.

Nope, they didn't test one...hence why I put the caveat in the post.

I was thinking M40i as a step up, until I drove a loaner car yesterday: G01 30i.
It is pretty fast all right.
I did test drive G30 540i last year. G30 and M40i use the same engine:B58.
Based on memory, G30 540i with 330 hp engine is not much faster than G01 with 248 hp engine for driving in the city.
I may have to take more time comparing M40i and 30i.
Perhaps, 30i is already a step up. Why spend more money?
New BMW owner here. I was deciding between an M40i and an x/sDrive and it came down to overall purchase price for me. I never drove one, but I'm sure I'd enjoy an M40i every time I drove it...but I also enjoy my sDrive every time I drive it and it was ~$10k less than any similar condition M40i I could find in my area. If money wasn't a factor, I would 100% choose the M40i and take the financial hit, but for the price I paid I'm having a damn good time in the sDrive so far. IF you haven't already been convinced (corrupted?) after driving an M/M Sport model the standard BMW models have plenty of punch.

Maintenance costs may also influence that decision too, I have to imagine that the same work costs more on an M40i than on a standard X3, so over the life of the car you're expected to pay even more.

Ultimately it should come down to the use case and how much you're willing to pay for the extra performance and at the time of my purchase the budget was the more important thing to me. I would love to own an M40i, or any of the M Sport models that BMW makes, but for now I don't regret getting my cheap standard model at all.

I've used it to prepare for job interviews: "What do you think are the top USPs for media at company X?" Saved me hours.

I told my daughter she might as well start using it at college, because everyone around her will be.

Agree with you on the 4Runner, plus, it is not very attractive either. It does not shine until you drive it hard off road, tough to beat actually!

I’ve owned three…. Incredible trucks. But that’s what they are, trucks with a back/top. 4Runners have a soul… it’s just an ancient one. They are literal (car) dinosaurs. But they are practically indestructible. Stil made and assembled in Japan; they are basically tanks. Last time we did a family ski trip up in Big Sky, I was finally able to rent one (all other times I had to settle for a Tundra or Highlander)…. And it just felt like “home”. Driving up to our friends house up the mountain in snow and ice was effortless and peaceful. 4Runners are simply “at home” in/on anything other than concrete.

Last one I swapped for the Macan GTS… 2014 4Runner Trail Edition with KDSS… added Bilstein 5100 shocks and did a 2-1 lift, FN Gunmetal Wheels, Terra Grapler G2s, RCI skid plates… it was the perfect daily driver that wasn’t overbuilt. Miss that truck sometimes…

EDIT: Stock Runners drive like crap… but the ones that had KDSS, once you swapped out shocks and tires, they drove perfectly fine for a heavy suv. You just have to remember it’s an off-road vehicle… Not a BMW.

Thanks. It ended up being the perfect build more or less… stuck with stock sized tires, so was able to keep MPGs close to 20… but had enough “beef” to handle almost anything. I went off-roading with some Jeep guys; and I heard multiple times… “that’s a mostly stock Runner?!… I’m impressed.”

Like I said… it was a great truck. It was the longest I kept any car I’ve owned as an adult. I also dropped in some Focal Speakers and sound deadening in the doors.

Someone picked up one helluva 4Runner when I traded that sucker…

I was always tempted to get a 4Runner because of how reliable and simple they are. Unfortunately after having Bimmers, I couldn’t get over the ride and engine. Not to mention my head hit the ceiling. It really is a good truck (emphasis on truck) and I wanted to like it, but I just couldn’t.
