Black Optics

Hi All,

I'm a wanna-be X3 M40i owner and actively seeking my first BMW. Looking for a 2019 or 2020 M40i but love the blacked out (black optics) look. I've seen a variety of posts on the subject but hoping I can get a clear answer on the topic. Is there a dealer option for a blacked out grill? If not, what are my aftermarket options? Other posts I've read suggest I can buy a new grill from IMD or paint the current one black? Anything else to consider?

No factory black out options. You would need to purchase all aftermarket trim items from a retailer like IND

You must have been looking at Audi cars, they use the term "black optics" and BMW is not so fortunate to offer it!

Yes there is. There is a factory M Performance black grill for the M40i. I just ordered a set today.

1 item out all the other pieces needed to black it out. And that would just be a dealer installed item....not from the factory.

Extended shadow line package - you don't get it in US? It contains black grills, breather insert, tailpipes.

Full blacked out.
Delivered by the dealer here in the NL.

I believe that there is a M-Competition option which gives you:
- Black grill/kidneys
- Black side vents (doesn't say so in the description??)
- Black exhausts

Just checked:

Option 7M9.
M Competetion pack.

Not possible from BMW factory on this model, but the option can be purchased separately and placed by the dealer.

Neither of these are available in the US. There are no factory options to get rid of the cerium here.

That looks awesome!! Thanks for sharing. So hard to believe BMW doesn't offer a simple option for that in the US. Or "remote start"!! Bimmer bummer.

Option 7M9 is called BMW Individual Shadow Line with extended content. It replaces chrome grill with black and grill and same for exhaust tips.
When I ordered my car, there wasn't such option. But I have retrofitted it Both tips and grill.

It's now standard in U.K. with M sport plus package I believe, and it is the Shadowline trim as others have mentioned so parts must be available
