X4 40D from June - currently 8000km incl 3500 holiday driving from north of Germany to French Alps. Drive 130km to job on mainly good country roads through some villages, speed up to 100-110km/h. On daily driving computer says I can do around 1100-1150 km which is around 6l/100 km. Total average for all km is 6,4l/100 km. Despite driving country roads I drive spirited. Actually quite satisfied.

I'm lucky if I show more than 320 in my M40i!

By coincidence I did a similar thing a few days ago in my 20i. Decided to drive on Eco Pro on trip to see the Mother In Law - yep, you guessed it, I was NOT in a hurry, LOL. Got range up to nearly 600 miles (photo taken just after this milestone when stationary and showing a smidge under 590, i.e. 81 miles driven and 507 miles range left). Not too shabby for a petrol engine. I drove like that for my whole trip and the upshot was I supposedly gained about 6 miles for every 100 driven according to the mile 'recovery' meter. What did I learn - 1. The novelty wears off very quickly, 2. I gained about 6% mpg by driving like a nun and, 3. I probably won't be using that mode again - ever!!

That is good for a petrol. My record so far is 550 miles from a tank, driving to Paris and back. Could probably get it to 600 if it wasn't for driving at 85mph on the french autoroutes, and driving around central Paris.

With my UK F25 35D the consumption increases once I'm over 60mph. I did try driving at 50 on a quiet motorway, I was seeing 50+mpg. If I stick to 70mph I can get mid to high 40's. I expect the M40D would be much the same. Wind resistance is a major factor here.

Was pretty chuffed my 689 mile range (1100km) today from my 30d. Got it from an average speed of around 73mph driving across half of France with cruise control set to the speed limit (around 81mph on most of it). Over 50% done in comfort, before I thought I'd give EcoPro a go. Wasn't hyper-miling it out of the toll booths, so a few heavy bursts of acceleration thrown in there. The sort of thing that would have drained a quarter of a tank in my old N55 engined M135i, but didn't make a dint in this.

About 4,500 miles from new in my 2.0d with combination of motorway and heavy city centre traffic and my average consumption is 40.7 mpg - haven't reset the computer since new. Fairly pleased with that. Have started using eco-pro on most motorway journeys even though typically sit at about 85mph when traffic allows, eco-pro doesn't stop you booting it when needed but does seem to claw back a few mpg when you're sat in slower traffic or at 50mph in between average speed cameras.
One question - why can't you use the coasting function when in comfort or sport? There are plenty of situations where you can see ahead and could reduce revs to 850rmp by a quick double pull on the right paddle but it only works in eco? Doesn't make any sense to me |

Agreed; I wouldn't expect too much more economy out of the 30d - I think it's mainly a software map between the two when it comes to the power/torque difference? Just the 50d that starts adding extra turbos, I think.

30d has 1 turbo, 40d has 2 turbos, 50d has 4 turbos (old one had 3).
