It's probably a one-hour charge because that's often the minimum dealer labor charge. I imagine it takes much less time, but they're charging you for a full hour because that's the minimum.

You can't DIY it because you don't have access to the required software. BMW isn't going to give mere mortals access to it (although I believe some thieves do have it).

Thanks! I guess I was too polite to put enough sarcasm in my previous comment. I doubt that they would need more than 5 min of actual 'working time'.

So the conclusion now for me is - no Display key retrofitting to me. I'm done here... moving on!

Since the display key talk directly to the car over 400 something MHz, no subscription is required, and the lag is very small. I.e. something like remote parking can work. It would never work via the app, where the lag is >1min ...
Anyway, it's actually smaller than I thought. And I can turn on the aux heater without internet connection. So totally useless it isn't. But as concluded already, most likely not worth retro fitting.
Oh, and the reach is actually quite decent. A few hundreds meters.

No complaints here!
But what can it do that the phone app can't? :

It's just a pointless device that takes up extra pocket room and needs charging! :
i posted this question but no one answer me yet - someone reported that the phone App is free for only 4 years in USA, could the Display key be useful for lifetime of the car? if yes, then it adds some reasoning in getting the Display key since another reported that it could be retro-fitted for US$600. It would be a third key for those who retrofit, and the cost is somewhat offset by not having to renew the App.

Any thoughts guys?
The phone app is free but certain Connected+ services / functionality (see attached screenshot) will need to be rebooked for a fee after 4 years. I don't believe the functionality offered by the display key does the same and even if it does personally not sure it is worth the price.

I think it is Connected that gives you smartphone access and does not expire i.e. some features will always be there, but Connected+ that gives you additional functionality within the app and which needs to be renewed as per my previous post.

I was super excited when I saw the display key. Can anyone say why it is only offered on certain models?

Don't do it. My useless display key is in a drawer somewhere gathering dust. I paid for a second non-display key because neither of us could stand using it.

It is truly a cumbersome piece of shit with a horrendous battery life. It's not even that impressive when it works.

I quite like mine, even though I admit it doesn't actually do anything, but at least the M logo looks nice...!

LOL not the comment I wanted to hear. But the one I needed.

Im just looking for some other than regular OEM key fob options. The standard BMW is just soo boring and plastic feeling.

100% agree. I used one three years ago. It's one of the most useless piece of tech available for any car. It's bulky, has poor battery life and very limited functionality compared with the Connected app for phones.

I have the Technology Pack and use the display key as my daily. I quite like the fact that I can check the doors are locked, windows are shut etc really quickly.

I also have the connected app on my phone. I charge key in the wireless tray very occasionally. Would I buy it separately, no, but seeing as it come with my car, I see no reason not to use it.

I do keep it in its faraday pouch all the time though unless driving in my car, where it slips into my pocket.

The display is key very useful imo.
I use it to check the last status of doors, windows etc. I used to be anxious when locking the car and ending up locking/checking the car 100 times when I leave it in a parking lot.
Now with the Display Key I can check the statuts of the vehicle even if I'm out of range.

I don't get all the hate for the display key.
I love mine, the biggest argument against it is that it is HUGE, but it is not that much bigger and the edges are sloped, so it is not a problem having it in my pants pocket.

Yes, you don't need it.
