Yes they have a film that you can put on but when driving at night it reflects headlights and tail lights. Makes them double in a sense

I'm at 35k miles now on mine and I got a pretty big chip a few months back. Took it to Safelite and got it filled in, was about $100 or something. It's on the passenger side so I don't see it, but its not as noticeable anyways.

My last car was a 2017 Mercedes E300, had the windshield replaced on that in the first year. Our company has 2018 Honda Accords, 3 have cracked windshields. Pretty sure its just a trend now, thinner glass = lighter weight = minuscule increase in gas mileage.

X3 windshield cracked

So on first road trip with wife's new X3, 70 miles on odo, OOOPS! debris from other lane of I 25 S, Albuquerque NM, divots the windshield up high by drivers A pillar. Few days later in 99 degree heat, hit the A/C, ZIPPP! now we have a crack almost a foot long in driver line of sight. Luckily she had signed up for windshield replacement insurance at dealer. Got a free new one put in by dealer and it has the distortion over on the right side everyone is talking about. Glass these days does seem more prone to damage. Glass on my 540 I lasted 90K until I bumped the mirror with my head and tore a chunk out of the inside of the glass. Is there such a thing as "soft" glass?

Windshields break more easily on modern vehicles because they are thinner. Why are they thinner? Thinner means less material, less cost, less weight. Less cost means more profit for the car company, and less weight enables compliance with increasingly strict fuel economy and emissions regulations. The consumer isn’t directly benefiting in this example.

3 times in 2500 miles is crazy!

I had a chip and it need repacking, but that's once in 10,000 miles. Also had my M3,4 and and X5 screen repacked.

BMW screens are fragile.

Hey Dylon -- same thing happened to me on the way home from Tahoe this weekend. Who has replaced the windshield for you? Wondering if you went to the dealership (who presumably contracts out the glass repair) or a dedicated auto glass place like Safelite? Interested in your experience, but bummed you've had so much of it!!
Most dealers do not sublet glass repairs. At most dealers there are usually a handful of techs that do glass work (windshields and other glued glass)

Update on Madico Clearplex Experience

If you search "Clearplex" on this site you'll find it mentioned in a few windshield related threads. I've had experience with Clearplex on my 2010 M3. Here's the link to my previous statements about that experience: https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=24173388&postcount=26 .

I did have Clearplex installed on my X3 in March by an installer in the DFW metroplex. The cost was $300. Within just a couple of weeks of having the film installed, the windshield as hit by a rock thrown up off a car tire in the left lane on I-35E as I was just about to exit the freeway. It was a big one I could see coming. I'm sure it would have broken the windshield. All that happened (besides the big whack from the hit) is the film has a 3/16" scar on its surface at the impact. Since the install we've traveled from the DFW area to Central California primarily on US-287, I-40, CA-58, US-99 twice and traveled back to DFW once. I've heard a couple of additional pretty good wacks, and found those results on the film along with a few small scars. So far I've not had to use the windshield wipers. I do use a sealant product, ClearplexHD, that Madico recommends applying every other month, and I keep the windshield and the wipers as clean as I can to minimize scratches if I have to use the wipers.

Clearplex is not easy to install. a fair amount of heat has to be used to fit it to a windshield, An experienced installer is required. It may be hard to find an installer near you. I had the Clearplex on my M3 for 8 years. When I sold the car, the film had a few large scars and a bunch of small ones that you only saw when driving into the sun. I don't recall anything but minor wiper scratches, but that car was only used for pleasure driving (including club tours) and wasn't in weather often. The X3 isn't exactly a daily driver either, but it will carry us back and forth from Texas to California a couple of times a year. Time will tell how well Clearplex will work. I'll be satisfied if I get 2 years out of it. 3 years would be great.
