All Season 21 Inch Tire Option

If this has already been posted, please forgive me. Rather than go down to 20’s or 22 inch aftermarket wheels, I wanted to keep the stock 21 inch wheels on the M40i. A lot of people have complained about the stock RFT, limited options and I also didn’t like the way the RFT felt.

So I just swapped out the RFT for Pirelli Scorpion All Season Plus XL tires. The front size is 265/40/21 ($240 each) and 295/35/21 ($272 each) on the rear. The ride feels much better than the RFT and now I don’t have to be concerned about summer tires during the upcoming limited winter we have here in TX. Hope this helps those who are looking for a non-RFT and all season option for the stock 21 inch wheels.

Hello

Looking for alternative tires for my BMW X3 M40i. Found this post and saw that you mounted 265 40 21 and 295 40 21. Was this on original rims and on a X3 M40i? Have you had any problems with this dimension? No rubbing in the front wheel housing? Looking forward to your reply.
Best

That looks to be a good option.

Hold on one minute!

Those tires fit? On the stock 21 inch rims on the X3 M40i?? No rubbing or any clearance issues? You have to post pictures! And who did you order those through, that gave you the ‘all OK’ on that? Everyone I have talked to said the front can’t take wider than 245 and the back not wider than 275.

cjackson1906: It would be much appreciated if you could confirm that this tires fit on a X3 M40i without any problems. I am considering ordering these tires within a few days.
Thanks in advance for your help.

He’s gone, guys, hasn’t posted for over a month.

Would be great if anyone can confirm those tires in the first post actually fit, and confirm with pics, everything I have seen in this website says either those won’t fit or they will rub. Tire rack and discount tire both say those tires won’t fit this vehicle as well.

I think some have. Absolutely no problem running that set up. Note that it's 40 profile ratio for both the front and rears.

As for the OP's set up, I'd truly be positively shocked if those sizes aren't causing any rubbing. Simply too big.

Wish X3's would run a wide wheels like X5 in M-package. Nothing better than a wide tire view in the back.

If you comparing 255 40 21 in front (confirmed that they fit) to 265 40 21 they are very similar in size (see link) so maybe he is right. However, you would like to have it confirmed before ordering.

+1

The X5M is so noticeable how wide those tires are on that thing. I want that look on this!

Good news

Hey all
E-mailed cjackson1906 a few days ago and received a reply from him yesterday.
He writes as below:

"Hey Carteen, sorry for the late reply but I haven't checked my email for a couple of days. I traded in my X3M40i almost a year ago, but the tires fit great with no issues. They were definitely an upgrade from the stock run flat tires. Hope this helps."

So I have now ordered these tires and will mount tomorrow. Will return with results and pictures.

Bad news

I mounted thes tyres today and sadley they dont fit. Minimum rubbing in the front but still rubbing. So i cant recommend this set up. Going for 255 40 21 all around instead.

Ah, too bad.

How about the rears? Even if I had to stay 255 in front would still like to go wider than 275 in back.

How about adding 15 mm spacers on the front do you think it will help?

Wouldn't

255/40R21
295/35R21

be a better fit?

https://tiresize.com/calculator/

shows 0.3% variance with this setup.

Whereas with 295/40R21 there is a 4.5% variance.

I love fat tires in the rear...

There's an X3 M in my parking garage this week and I really like the overall look of 255/265. Nice and beefy all around, though the rear could be beefier in my opinion.

Wonder if you could run 265/40 on the front. Pirelli has a all-season tire in 265/40 & 295/35 for around $1000 a set.

What about adding like 10mm spacers to clear front?

Spacers will increase the “swept” area when turning. Depending where the rubbing is, a spacer will likely make it worse.
I’m about to try a set of 265 40 21’s (from the Macan I used to own) for a winter setup on the factory 21’s. I’ll let you know if it fits.
