Stumbled across this ... "The culprit is the integration of the gasoline particulate filter, which is absolutely necessary to comply with the new limit values of certain exhaust gas components and increases the exhaust backpressure."

My M40i sounds like someone sat on a whoopie cushion while accelerating. The closest thing to a pop happens as you downshift. It's definitely different from the 18/19 models. It's a bit depressing.

Got the VIN from the dealer. All in line with what I have ordered. The VIN starts with WBA which would indicate Germany. Looking now at the BMW plants there, none lists the X3 as a product they produce at the moment...
They do not build X3 in Germany. Only US and also starting in South Africa.
My VIN is also WBA built in June 2019 in Spartanburg in the USA.

My VIN is also WBA built in June 2019 in Spartanburg in the USA.
The first three characters of the VIN are an identifier for the manufacturers code, in this case BMW AG, Munich, Germany (WBA).

Most if not all G01 X3 M40i's are built in Spartanburg in the US, with the M40d being built in Roslyn, South Africa.

It's has been quoted / floated by others that the plant in Roslyn, South Africa may start building the M40i's for the LCI version in 2020 onwards as well...

http://wiki.bavariantechnic.com/inde...e=VIN_Decoding

So for the VIN, the following is how to break it down:
Digits 1-3 = Manufacturers Code
Digits 4-7 = Vehicle Model Code
Digit 8 = Safety System Identifier
Digit 9 = Check Digit
Digit 10 = Model Year
Digit 11 = Plant Code
Digits 12-17 = Sequential Production No.

My car has the corresponding digits which equate to Model Year 2020 & Spartanburg, which is correct for my X3 M40i MY2020.

Just ordered an M40i to be delivered in June, and was just wondering if someone could post a stock exhaust video of a well broken in 2020 model. Hope things got a bit looser than in earlier videos... Still a bit unsure about the exhaust change for the model year but settled on more power...

Pretty sure my videos are still in this thread. Nothing changes once broken in. https://www.youtube.com/user/pshean84

The burbles and pops on the 2020 are programmed from the DME to only happen at higher RPM. You have to be around 4-5,000 or higher to get pops. Going around parking lots though you can a little burble in sport plus at slower speeds.

I also found that if you stop somewhere and shut off the engine when you jump back in within like 15 minutes (not sure the exact time cut off) and press sport plus then turn on the car you get a hot start which is like a Roar. It Revs high and burbles coming back down. It's pretty aggressive and it's wild.

Which drive modes make the exhaust pops/crackles on the 18/19 build M40i?

Is it only Sport Plus? I sometimes get them on Sport Individual where I've set the engine to 'plus', but everything else on Comfort.

But....it's a bit unpredictable. Sometimes I'll drive it exactly the same way (eg rev and then let off the throttle suddenly), and it makes nice pops. Other times nothing.

What are the factors that make the noise?

it should always crackle when you downshift gear at high rpm when engine setting is sport plus. at least it does for me (and when engine is warm).

It does awesome bursts when launching the car on ramp to merge on highway (safely of course).

I have MY2019 US without particulate filter though.

Generally speaking you only get the pops/crackles if there is resistance in the drive-train when you let off the gas (engine braking). It is more common in sport and sport plus modes because the transmission gearing is more aggressive which increases the occurrence of resistance due to being in a lower gear with more aggressive rpm ranges.

It feels random because if the car does all the shifting you probably don't pay much attention to rpm and gearing; eg if it up-shifts right before you let off the gas you likely get no pops. Play around in full manual mode for a few days and you'll get a better feel for how it works.

Thanks Deladude

I love the exhaust/engine sounds! (not so much the fake interior ones which I've turned off)

The pops and cracks are attributed to the programming in the DME for over run. In the 2018/2019 M40's the pope and burbles can happen at much much lower RPMs. This is true in park and revving in sport plus or driving in sport plus. The 2020 M40i when parked and revving in sport plus only burbles and pops at around 4,500 or higher. The DME software is very different.

Just wondering if there is a way to subdue the loud cold starts on demand? Dont get me wrong, I love the cold start sound, but it's a bit neighbour-unfriendly at 6am.

Not without a tune. Simplest way to quiet it down is start it up and put it in drive/reverse. It will lower the RPM and be a little quieter.

To make it even quieter I back out of my driveway holding gas and break to quiet it even more. Takes some getting used to but it helps with my Catted Downpipe and cold start noise.

Thanks. I'll give the brake and gas method a shot the next time I need to drive out early.

The exhaust sounds is very disappointing on my 2020. It sounds amazing at startup and when you’re really at high RPMs and downshift.

Is there a way to open exhaust valve by pulling fuse with no error code?

Yes. If you pull fuse 203 after the valve is open, it will stay open and won't throw any codes. Sounds too simple to be true, but it really is that easy!
