Has anyone in history ever regretted getting a B58?

It is pretty fast all right.
I did test drive G30 540i last year. G30 and M40i use the same engine:B58.
Based on memory, G30 540i with 330 hp engine is not much faster than G01 with 248 hp engine for driving in the city.
I may have to take more time comparing M40i and 30i.
Perhaps, 30i is already a step up. Why spend more money?
So, have you decided what you're going to do?

Either we scared them off or I’ll find them soon on the Honda Odyssey forum. 🤣

...but all kidding aside...

one other interesting point of note for anyone that cares... the B58 in the M40i is in inline 6 motor which is naturally balanced without additional countershafts... this actually means outside of a V12, its about the smoothest motor with the lowest NVH available on the market...

there is a big difference with NVH between the 4 and 6 when you start the cars up... the 4 sounds and feels rougher in general if that makes sense... that will always be the case when comparing an I4 to an I6 motor but just another factor to consider in a premium car

I always wondered about this. I test drove the 30i when last year and loved the performance but never got to really test it. Can’t imagine what a m40i feels.

I’ve read multiple articles saying that purists years from now will be pulling B58s from junked cars and building them into monsters… because the engine is built that well/strong and can handle so much more.

Crazy this engine is (supposedly) THAT good.

OP seems to be long gone, but an important caveat here which might have been lost is that while the B58 is "the same" engine used across model lines, the tuning difference between a 5 series "base" ~40i and the M-Performance-worked B58 in the X3 M40i is pretty significant. I have both an X5 40i and an X3 M40i and it's not a subtle difference

Lol, OP with the post and dash!

Curious on your thoughts on the M40i vs X5… We have a M40i and I am debating on trading it in for an X5. How does the ride compare? I find the M40i to ride stiff and a little harsh. Are the downshifts on the X5 more subtle in comparison. Any thoughts/opinions overall are appreciated!

Thank you all for responding to my post.
I have been occupied with works and my son's Toyota problem.
My apology for not responding sooner.

I will test drive both, back to back in Spring (April).
The highways are still partially covered with snow/ice right now.

It is that good outside acknowledgement is pretty good:

BMW B58 grabbed one of the World's 10 Best Engines from WardsAuto 4X.

Since 1999, BMW has been awarded overall International Engine of the Year 5X

Motortrend:
Honda Odyssey: 6.6s
X3 30i sdrive: 6.5s
Actually I was just looking at this and what I found was very different.
I found car and driver at 6.2 and others are all around 6.0-6.2

I also agree with the “feel” factor. My hellcat may have traction problems in the real world but it sure does feel fast and is very fun to drive, as is my scat that my son has now.

That being said I did test drive the m40i and they let me really push it including highway driving and I was very impressed. It was lightning fast, and fun. I ended up getting a 30i as it’s going to my wife in 6 months so it would have been a waste of money lol… but I’m seriously considering the m40 now, if I can find a reasonably price one year old one…

Also, my last bmws were a 2007 335.i and 2008 m3…. And I have to admit, the 335 was 1000 times better than that m3, as far as fun and feel, which is all that really matters as how many of you are going to a quarter mile track anyways lol.

Funny side story, a few days before I sold the cat, some kid in an x4m tried me hard pulling up so close to me he was basically in the back seat, so as we left development , I let him pass then we met at a light . He was stopped and I was still in process of stopping and it turned green, he got the Jump and punched it , so I did too… unfortunately the cat went to first gear and then the spinning started, granted it’s still moving but I couldn’t catch him for a while… I would say between 1/8-1/4 mile then the cat started to gain and with more road I pass him easily. Not sure why I’m rambling with no point other than that M was very fast , it fended of the cat for a while… which most cars couldn’t do at all. Man, I miss my cat… talk about a loss of hp lol. I Went from 717 to 248 in probably the same weight vehicles lol

this looks like some google gibberish... a q5 0-60 is 5.9 seconds... its a tad bit faster than the X3 due to DCT gearing down low and 13 more HP

Audi's big mistake was getting rid of the "MMI click wheel and buttons" going to touch screen only. The clicker was excellent, resting your wrist on the shifter all the controls were at your fingertips, very quick to use.

That may be, but car and driver has it at 6.2 so 6.6 is way off. I have seen other credible reports of 6.0 as well. Of course conditions on test day make a difference too, ie temp, altitude, tires, driver etc. in any case I am excited about possibly getting the m40 next. It is definitely night and day from the 30, I drove them back to back same day on the same route.
All that being said, I have enjoyed the first month in the 30… if I wanted super fast I would have kept the hellcat lol

So every one that is un-sprung, are you having buyer's remorse sufficient to trade in?

Went from a '21 X3 30i to a '22 X5 45e. Without even taking into consideration driving, just sitting in the X5 is a night and day difference to the X3. The X5 is comfort without a doubt. For example the configurator just says the arm rests, steering wheel, and seats are heated. There's even a picture showing the areas, it but doesn't mention nor show that the door arm rests are also heated. Then you've got the separate HVAC fan speeds for the driver and passenger. It's quieter on the highway. People will say it feels floaty, but I don't feel it. Whatever drive mode I'm in I always have suspension lowered the to lowest level, and when I hit a bump I feel it sort of slamming (could be the extra 800lbs from the battery in the back), but it isn't as noticeable when I'm not in the lowest setting. If you go for the M50i/M60i you can option the beautiful Bowers and Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System. Plus you can option the Dynamic Handling Package which gives you IAS.

We picked up our 45e at PCD and did the slalom in a 40i. I was honestly nervous about taking those sharp turns at 40-50+mph, but it held its ground. Best decision ever upgrading, and doing an Individual Color build as well.
