Coolant Loss

Hi Everyone,

My X4M has 7228 miles on it and presented no problems. Nevertheless, at 5000 miles, I noticed that the green coolant was below the minimum line on both the turbo and engine reservoir tanks. I visited the local BMW shop and they filled it up to the max line for both.

Since 2200 miles driven on the car, the coolant is now rescinding again towards the minimum line. I examined both caps and did not see any coolant evaporating around the caps.

Before this x4m, I had a M340i and it never lost any coolant. Is anyone in the forum losing coolant without any signs of loss?

Not sure if this is a problem enough for a trip to the dealer. I have to add about 1 1/2 cups to fill both reservoirs.

Any thoughts? Thank you in advance.

I had a small amount (probably about 1/2 the amount you described) of coolant loss in the first 20k miles, but haven't had any loss since...

But, I didn't even know there was a second revisor, where is it?

Thanks,
John

So, your loss is much less than me. Was it far below the low indicator within the turbo reservoir (smaller container)?

No, just slightly, but added a cup to get it up to Max.
The main reservoir was also about a cup+ low, but I added to that one about a year ago.

Since I just checked the turbo (left) one, maybe a total of 2+ cups, over 24k miles.

I read if you idle the car too much it will burn coolant but not sure if this is true. Since I always remotely start the car for 10 minutes, I wonder if this is the issue. I drove 500 miles from Cleveland to NYC averaging about 75 to 85 MPH without any loss of coolant. For the last 1500 miles, I do short trips around the city.

Maybe, I only do short trips, very rarely over 15 miles.
So, would make sense...
