Best sounding intake

Wanted to share. I missed hearing the turbos. 3" K&N filters fit directly onto the turbo uptubes. The uptubes are able to rotate to get to a great position. <100 bucks, sounds amazing and logs look good so far!

I'd be interested to see what IATs are with those... might lose some HP when it warms up. But yeah, I tend to upgrade the air intakes just to hear the whistles and whooshes too

Are these mainly for sound ? would these gain anything over a set of drop in filters ?

I have never seen a issue on any of my BMW builds when using "hot air intakes". Im tuned and will watch logs, but so far so good. I do not expect any HP gain. My smile per mile have gone up substantially considering the low cost. I also like access to the engine.

Future plans: Fabricate a scoop for the front passenger side, blank the driver side. Take a g80 engine cover and tweak to fit. Lower oil cap.

I gotta think that’s going to sap power. IAT’s will likely soar with the heat under hood. If all you want is sound, cool.

From what I can tell so far, the IAT temp difference is negligible, unless your under hood is air tight or you are at a stand still in 100F heat, the engine bay is moving enough are via ducts and open space it wont effect IAT. The existing ducts from the housing is still pumping in cold air the same way it was, its just not in a box configuration the whole way through.

tl;dr, no change in IAT or power that I've found. I'll log come spring/summer and try to prove it.

the hot air vs cold air is a ancient debate. Most testing shows it doesn't matter, some data shows very minimal negative iat impact.

Here one from back in the N54 days:

I'm running the Eventuri Intake. Difference being there are scoops in the front grille that help guide airflow in easier and the filters that drop-in place of the airbox, the high flow filters seem to be just K&N rebranded and with Eventuri's red.

The filters are not K&N, my guess would be they're made by BMC. The Dinan ones too.

I have the same intake and honestly I don’t hear the differences. A friend of mine told me might bear it during colder climates. As for the scoop did you had to remove the oem filter on the front left and right side of the inner grill to put the scoop on? For me those scoop wouldn’t fit on it unless the oem were taking out.

oh my bad i was going off the title for the best sounding not the best performing

i always figured intakes dont really do too much for performance anyways

i have had intakes in the past and i did feel a difference in throttle response and pull thru rpms but nothing drastic

On most vehicles, an intake adds 7-10hp. It's possible to notice that on an engine that puts out 300hp but it's going to be very hard to notice on an F97 pushing 500hp. On this platform you aren't going to gain much performance wise and not sound wise either unless you do a setup like OP's. Eventuri all but admitted that their intake isn't more efficient than the OEM air box and that it's pretty much an aesthetic upgrade.

This is true. I put BMC drops ins the same time I put Racechip in so I have no idea whether the filters did anything. But I’m convinced removing the charcoal filters remove some restrictions. I did that on an E60 550 and felt the difference in responsiveness

Same - put the Eventuri filters in and didn't really notice much.

So I've gone ahead and removed the scoops aswell as the filters while on my BM3 93 AGG Stage 2 Tune with my Catless Race DP on and I do hear a huge difference, this was tried during while engine was 29*C and also 102*C. There's more of a whistle noise. Both runs were done during 5*C so it was relatively cold here in Canada.

Yes you're right, they're BMC filters.

A custom tuner told me that he would prefer this set-up over the RK Tunes front mount set-up even though this is hot air vs RK cold air because there is a much shorter area for the air to travel on this one promoting better flow to the turbos. Idk, what do you guys think?

I have done this now, fliters dont touch anything, 3" generic cones off amazon. Sounds pretty neat. the IAT's are the same as pre, the ducts flow straight to them and the turbos/headers are far enough away to not heat soak, pretty cool cheap mod for those who dont care whats under the hood.

instead of paying $500+ to my local bmw dealership, i'll resurrect this dead thread.

do any of you that have done this have any filter specifics? I see someone mentioned 3" earlier. is that a 3" base that fits over the intake piping? do any sensors need to be moved? what kind of fastener did you use?
