Having looked into it it's Vernasca which, according to google, is synthetic

LOL - Vernasca is real leather.

On the BMW Uk website the faux leather is called "LEATHERETTE" AKA Sensatec which is a seat covering only available on the base X Line X3 in the UK. It is not an option in the UK on the M40.

Sensatec looks and feels different to Vernasca Leather. Sensatec is used on the dash and door caps on the UK M40, whilst Vernasca real leather is on the seats, door cards etc.

The Merino leather seats I had in the X5 were much more plush and luxurious than the Vernasca leather in the M40i. If ride comfort, especially over long distances, is your priority I would stick w the X5 but the M40i is the faster, more fun car to drive by far.
I wouldn’t say ride comfort is a priority but it’s a consideration. I have a recurrent lower back problem and our roads in the UK are full of potholes and speed bumps and don’t want something that ‘crashes’ over bumps.
I have an X3M which is even stiffer than an X3 M40 and I still don't find it uncomfortable in Nottingham, driving over some of the worst surfaces in the UK. I test drove an M40 too and it was definitely softer than the X3M. I think you'll be just fine on the comfort and would definitely love the performance. I would say go for it 👍🏻

Had a 2017 f15 x5. Didn't have the adaptive suspension. Found the car very floaty. When the lease was up was debating a g05 but felt it was way too big. Downgraded to the x3m (now have an m40i) I miss some
Of the luxury features of the x5 but I driving the x3 is more fun and engaging

I am in Toronto. Love the X3 M40i but do miss the comfort ride of X5. On the M40i you definitely feel every bump and pothole more but the handling and power is amazing. Going over speed bumps are fine since never drive fast over speed bumps.

Re: seats I find them similar and perhaps the Vernasca leather slightly better.

I wish the X3 had air suspension for city driving (like the X5 and Macan?) but I think Toronto has worse for potholes than London. The last time I was in London (twice this year) I remember thinking wow the roads are so much better than Toronto (probably due to our harsh winters).
Thanks, yeah London roads are smooth as silk compared to the part of the UK we live
You've never driven on the A406.

I prefer Sheffield roads to that nasty thing.

OP- I’ve spent a fair amount of time with X5 and X7 loaners over the past few years and now I have a 2022 X3 M40i. I think a combination of people on here have it right. If the X5 your coming out of had air suspension your going to notice a huge difference in ride dynamics. With this said the LCI M40i is much softer than the pre-LCI and rides really nice. Where the X5 will shine is on really bad winter roads in town and on expansion joints in the highway. The seats in the new X3 are also way firmer than the seats in the X5 and X7. This adds to the sense of taught ness. If BMW offered an air suspension for the X3 it would be amazing but they don’t. You just have to know what the trade offs are between models and go with your gut or in this case butt. Oh also I am not entirely convinced tire size 20 vs 21 makes that much of a difference. Tire brand and type (RF vs non RF) do make a modest difference.
