Understood, have done this on another BMW wheel but was a bit confused because some of the photos I have seen have holes while others have indents that need to be pierced, but all makes sense now. Thanks so much for the info.

All you need to do is carefully push straight up or down at each of the notches where the control stalks exit the column. It doesn't take much to pop them off as they're only held on with plastic clips. I can usually do it using a thumb leveraged on the hinge of the control stalk. Don't bother pulling out pry-tools as you'll just make a mess of the plastics.
Got it, thanks!

Is it safe to assume that all North American G01's have 3 stage airbags?
I read through all the steering wheel swap threads and could not confirm.

I also have a 2018 m40i with the non M steering wheel and hate it. I found this one which is a custom non-sport steering wheel but does anyone know how much of a pain it will be to swap out all the parts from my current wheel to the new one? or is it just worth finding a fully built up M wheel for a direct swap

You just need some small torx screwdrivers and patience and being careful. It's not hard to swap it all over.

I WAS considering an M steering wheel swap on my wife's 2018 X3, until I started getting deeper in to actual costs.

Found a local guy (Toronto) that does some amazing work with re-upholstering including beefing up the thickness of the wheel for around $200 CDN - definitely going this route.

Ignore the MVP on the steering wheel, or any of the other flashy stuff - this is not my exact wheel but the same model that was done on another customers.

I have the regular non-M skinny version also with no steering wheel heater - do you know if the steering wheel heater will work if I do this swap?
