How to disable ASD on your 2018 - 2019 X3 M40i: 3 methods that do not require coding
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I've updated the title of this thread to reflect all of the methods (so far) for disconnecting ASD that the contributors to this thread have discovered and posted about. Thanks to everyone for your excellent, informative posts and for making this thread awesome! You all rock! Methods: 1) Unplug the connector on the ASD mixing module (*works on HK equipped vehicles ONLY). See my original post below. 2) Take out fuse 218 (*works on HK equipped vehicles ONLY). See Pretzel's posts middle of page 3 3) Install the Technic bypass harness (works on HK equipped and base stereo vehicles). See Pretzel's post top of page 3 Method 1 - Unplug the connector on the ASD mixing module (*works on HK equipped vehicles only): After reading several informative posts on here about disconnecting the ASD module (thanks to the OP's), I decided to try this on my X3 M40i. Turned out to be really easy and only took 10 minutes! Note that I have the Harmon Kardon sound system. Original posts are here: https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1473441 https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1082175 Now that I've had a chance to compare ASD on and off, I must say that I am surprised how loud the "fake" sound actually is when ASD is on. No offense to those that like ASD, but I've concluded that I definitely prefer it off. Here are the steps (See Max Well's post in the middle of page 1 for all of the pictures): 1. Remove the left cover in the cargo area to reveal the large amp. The ASD mixing module that looks like a "small amp" which you need access to is behind this (pictures #1 and #2). 2. Remove the 4 bolts (10mm socket) holding the black bracket to which the large amp is attached to get access to the ASD mixing module. You don't need to disconnect the large amp, just move it to the side. The grey connector which you need to disconnect is located at the bottom of the ASD mixing module (picture #3). 3. Remove the 1 bolt on the upper left hand side (10mm socket) holding the black bracket which the ASD mixing module is attached to, then rotate it clockwise (as shown in picture #4 with the connector already disconnected) to get access to the grey connector. 4. To disconnect the connector (shown facing you in picture #5), press the small grey square "in" with a flathead screwdriver, then slide the black lever over it and pull to disconnect. Put everything back in reverse order, and enjoy your "natural" sounding vehicle! Last edited by TX3M; 11-20-2020 at 01:19 PM.. |

Uploading and Posting Photos
Down at the bottom of the page where you can create a quick reply post; click the "Go Advanced" button. Once the advanced post entry page comes up; scroll down the page until you see the "Manage Attachments" button; click on that and a page will pop up that will allow you to chose files off of your computer to upload, or to list URL's where files can be uploaded from. Once you have made your choices, be sure to click on the appropriate "Upload" button on the pop up page.
Once you've completed those steps you can manage your uploaded files from the "Attach Files" section near the bottom of your advanced post input page. You will be able to see how the uploaded photos will appear in your post by using the "Preview Post" button. It's likely that there is more that you can do to manipulate your uploaded photos. It's just that it's been years since I've posted regularly here, and I'm sure I've forgotten several of the fine points.

Thanks for sharing your process, TX3M. I collated the photos onto one jpeg for ease of reference.

I can confirm that no other functions of the sound system are affected by disconnecting it. I also think that the sound system sounds "cleaner" now that it's not having to produce the additional engine and exhaust sounds. Last edited by TX3M; 12-27-2018 at 12:50 PM.. |

A crazy thought just appeared in my mind - for those who added a dedicated amp and a big sub to the trunk - what would happen if the ASD is plugged to the new amp/sub? :

Jokes aside I've never understood enthusiasts who turn stuff off in their cars. We're the kind of people who typically know everything about the cars before we buy them. I knew ASD was fake when I test drove the car — and I liked it. So, apparently, did the C/D reviewer who test drove a Z4 M40i at the press introduction who describes a "throaty" exhaust note. Even fools the pros.
