BMW moving away from "M Performance" vehicle branding

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Going forward, today's M Performance models will be known as M cars slotting just below the single digit M models.

So for the 3 Series derived models, for example, all the below are now simply "M cars":

M340i
M3
M3 Competition
M3 CS

And now here come the M owners about to say the M340i is not a true M car and shouldn't be in the same category. Lol.

Basically the AMG approach. Even though the M340i is 400+ hp car stock, it's not a real M car.

The irony is that the majority of these real M cars are being used in the exact same manner as most of us M340i drivers. Which is daily commute to and fro from work which really defeats its true purpose and capability.

So I have purchased, owned and driven three *real* M cars, the last one being an M3 competition package car. I guess that makes me an M guy lol.

I have an M340 on order. I had several out for extended drives. I was very impressed by the smoothness, the comfort and the overall near perfect balance of the car. I’m really looking forward to owning it and driving it for next three years.

Don’t worry who’s thinking it’s not a ‘real’ M. It’s a great car. In many ways superior to my 2017 ‘real’ M car.

I’m very proud to have recently fulfilled a lifetime dream to own an air cooled Porsche Carrera. That is a REAL Porsche. Authentic, pure classic. I found a gem.... 17000 original miles.... one owner. I would not trade it for a new overweight over complicated new Porsche for anything in the world. The thunk of the door, the real howl of the air cooled flat 6, that classic leather/exhaust smell that permeates every air cooled 911. My M3 feels like a video game in comparison.

Trust me driving a ‘real’ M car as a daily is an exercise I’m patients. Constantly holding back.

I can only imagine because that's how I feel with the M340i lol and why for the daily grind I just keep it in comfort.

I thought M was hype till I drove one, couldn't get the grin off my face, and then bought it on the spot!
The way the chassis communicates back to you and the confidence in handling is worlds apart. It was like the feeling going from my Civic to my first 328i back in the day.

I've had lots of 3-series cars (see my signature). And the funny thing is the M3 has been the best daily driver I've had. Lots of usable power on the streets with the right tires. The adaptive suspension and non-RFT tires gives it a comfortable ride.

I couldn't care less they call the M340i a M car. The M340i is a good car. I test drove it. I would buy one. It's just that the actual M cars just have a way better driving experience.

I would only cringe if they start putting M badges on a 320i.

I’ve always thought the perfect unflappable suspension was what made the m cars the best. I always got mine with the stick. The manual tranny was the weak link of the M 3 in my opinion. The piped in sound was a bit tacky. The low stance and wide hips are just about perfect. I think the m340 engine sounds better as well

The m340 with the adaptive suspension and non run flat Michelin tires is pretty damn near perfect

Yeah, it just feels so... right. Driving it feels like slipping into a nice bath. I can't drive stick, but the DCT is improved over the DCT from my 2011 335is.

I think the M340i is a great car. Can't go wrong with the B58 engine, I loved it in my 340i. If they're calling it a M car they should make it look more aggressive for the LCI. I can't get used to "flat" cars without hips now

For me the m340i took time to appreciate vs my previous f30 340i, both with adaptive suspension.

More power is always welcomed but I'd have to imagine the next M3 will be too harsh to daily, this car is right on the line and very rewarding to drive. I keep mine steering comfort, suspension comfort, engine sport plus transmission sport for normal driving.

I'm new to the M family. But I gotta be honest. The inclusion of M Performance doesn't really bother me. I don't think in this competitive market that BMW could have afforded to not make more true M models (X3/4) and more appealing M Performance. I'm just happy we have these options at all.

as long as it makes bmw develop better real M models who cares how they make money, even if its placing M stickers on everything.

bmw was the last to follow Audi with S line and RS models. where S cars are just like M240 etc. and then AMG got on the bandwagon with c43 amg and such.

people love badges, so being in business of selling cars these companies are selling much more now so good for us. more money for R&D for true M cars. ......and maybe a new designer for m3/4 front grills
