Tire recommendations - 285/40-19 on 9.5 wheel?

So I took advantage of the Black Friday sale and scored some 19x9.5 VMR V705 wheels for my X3 in satin black. I have 20s on now but with our New England roads I wanted a meatier tire especially that my wife mostly drives the X3.

I decided to do a full square set-up, which in my opinion has a lot of advantages. I also love the concavity of a 9.5" wheel.

All wheels are : 19x9.5 ET33

I want to do 285/40-19 square tire set-up and from my measurements it should be perfectly fine in the front except maybe for the oil cooler trim that can slightly rub.

My only concern is how would 285/40 look on a 9.5 wheel? Most likely getting Michelin's

You and I literally have been doing the same mods for months lol. I just got in my wheels as well. Same story, vmr v801, 19x 9.5, slightly more aggressive +25(7mm diff. or 1/4”). I went with the falken azenis 510, 275/35. The tire is way bigger than needed up front lol. Price was amazing and the reviews dry and wet were really good. Congrats man, we should be friends lol

Also to add, if your lowering the car at all, I might reconsider the profile height. That 285/40 will be a little tall. Not a dealbreaker tall, just a little much imo. If it helps at all I'll update as soon as I get these mounted to show the profile of the 275/35.

I have HR springs sitting in a box waiting to be installed. MyIndy mechanic quoted me $800 for install and a 6-7 hr timeline.

If I can fit a thicker tire in to fill the wheel well....I’ll prolly nix the springs.

Haha, if you were only closer man! The VMR sale was great, the wheels were MASSIVE cheap. I have a few other mods planned for the X3 and I'm excited to mod this platform and progress it a little further! Make X3 great again lol

Yeah I plan on lowering it with some Eibach springs and some Bilstein shocks in the future! I been doing tons of research on wheels/tires and springs/shocks and although there's not much out there for the X3, I came across a few posts that helped me decided on 285/40-19s. The link below is to a post for an X3 owner who installed wheels from X5M with front set up at 275/40-20 on 20x10 ET40, which comparing to my 285/40-19 19x9.5 ET33 isn't all that bad lol. It's about 20mm smaller in diameter and is 10mm further away from the strut while matching the fender flare nicely. He said he only rubbed on the inner strut because of high offset.

For reference, this is a 295/35 on 20x9.5 wheel

I like the extra tire poke for rim protection!

I'm a size queen so, you had me at 295. The only other thing I'll add is, additional unusable weight. It's minor but I sold myself on this setup because of the weight savings. My current setup, staggered 310m 20", and they weigh 70lbs each. Tires are 35 lbs and wheels are 37lbs. New setup is 28lbs for tires and 25lbs for wheels(53lb per corner), that's roughly 80lbs total in weight savings. I expect it to have plenty of grip while gaining some performance. Also the overall diameter being shorter, I should gain a little torque. I'm just giving my reasons on why I settled on these, you seem to be of similar thought. I look forward to seeing it finished!

I'm with you, my biggest worry is combined weight with thick tires. Rep at VMR said 19x9.5 V705s wheels are 26 lbs, my tires will be Michelins 285/40-19, but I cannot find the weight of that tire so I'm guessing 32 lbs (Michelins are usually a bit lighter).. My current wheels are 20x9 ET35 245/40 and 20x10.5 ET45 275/35 so I don't think the weight will change much. My local Town Fair Tire offered me 275/40-19 Nankang NS-20 Noble Sport for $88 a piece, which is a great deal but haven't heard many good things about Nankang.

Tire rack says 31lb for the michelin pilot sport fyi. The Nankangs are good for the money, but they're also crap lol. If you haven't scooped out tire rack, they lost all info for tires as well as actual performance values. They test a good bit of the tires they sell and have them rated according to wet, dry, stopping etc.its definitely helpful. I paid just under $800 for the falkens, they also came with a two year protection plan.

Cant believe I missed that when I checked tirerack lol.. Looks like 275/40-19 and 285/40-19 are same weight at 31 lbs, I guess extra 10 mm of tire weighs nothing?

Current set-up: (assuming michelins which mines are not so probably tires are heavier)
Front- 245/40-20 (27lbs) + 20x9 Stance SC8 (29lbs) = 56 lbs
Rear- 275/35-20 (31lbs) + 20x10.5 Stance SC8 (34lbs) = 65 lbs

New set-up:
Front- 285/40-19 (31lbs) + 19x9.5 VMR (26lbs) = 57 lbs
Rear- 285/40-19 (31lbs) + 19x9.5 VMR (26lbs) = 57 lbs

In return, I'm hoping to have better steering feel and a bit less understeer.

I know it's an old thread but I'm interested to see how these looked on your x3 and what tire you ended up with on the 19x9.5 rim.

Have any rubbing issues? That's a pretty huge tire on a pretty small offset. I'm guessing at full lock, like in a parking lot, you must have heard the fronts once in a while?
