I have 295x35 Michelin ps4s on my rear wheels. I inflated them last year, to 38lbs like the stock tires and only 6000 miles in, they are worn in the center as if overinflated. Same thing happened with the rear snow tires last year when keeping them inflated to stock pressures though the rear snows were stock 265x40. Anyone encounter this? Do you just run your pressure a little lower on the rear to avoid this wear as it indicates overinflation? Why would stock pressures result in overinflation wear?
Thanks for any insight!

I had no idea this could happen. I also have the 265/40 front & 295/35 rear tire upgrade. I run 38 PSI in the front & 39-40 PSI in the rear. Even the owners manual says for speeds above 100 MPH this is a decent pressure to have.

I will have to look into this more & only have about 2,000 miles on my PS4S so far.

Every BMW I have owned has had center rear wear if you follow the door placard suggested psi. I typically run 32F and 33R which seems to be my sweet spot for wear and handling. I also find that 35+ psi really makes the car feel unsettled.

I also keep my pressure according to the book for that reason. Cold pressure 38

Are there any safety issues going above 100mph with that low of a rear pressure? I don’t spend a lot of time above 100, but it happens sometimes and I don’t want any surprises.

You'll notice vehicle instability and some rather unsettling sway. Around the 110 to 120 mark the vehicle will feel as if it's being pushed side to side by the wind. I noticed this on continental dws tires that I had only inflated for under 100mph driving.

Fwiw, my car sees triple digits on almost a daily basis. I have not felt any issues at high sustained speeds, on snow tires or mp4s. That said, I am on aftermarket suspension and my toe setting on custom alignment is close to zero. I wasn’t a fan of stock alignment setting at any speeds above 80 as it was just way too twitchy for me.

As far as safety, 30+ psi is plenty pressure for a tire to be considered properly inflated.
