3.0d Normal operating temperature?

Hello all,
On all BMWs I've owned and known, the temperature needle is normally at 50%, right in the middle. I recently bought a 2010 X3 3.0d (E83), and the needle lives around the 60% mark. During the test drive, the guy I bought it from said that was where the needle sat all the time. I've been stuck on traffic for a couple hours since I bought it, and the needle stays there at around 60%.

Should I be concerned? Or is this normal on a diesel? All my BMW experience is in gasoline engines.

Federico.
