All the SUV "coupes" look terrible. Never understood the point of them. Take an SUV, and make it useless as an SUV.

Not sure what else you guys expected. The regular X4 looks stupid from the rear so the ///M will be no different.

Now the X3 on the other hand is a handsome 'ute, especially in M40 trim. I know the full blown ///M will look great.

I do think Mercedes has done a better job with their styling, especially on the GLC coupe.

I can understand the appeal as everybody and their mother drives an X3, so something a tad different [in theory] should be appealing. However BMW has never been able to get the styling right on any of their SAV "coupes."

An X3 M40 in Phytonic Blue is "different" enough from the crowd for me.

What's a sexy body with no curves? What's a beautiful butt and no hips?

What's an M car with no wheel arches and absence of an aggressive stance?

I guess I'm sad, that's all.

Agreed - the rear tires look really skinny, not much "presence" there....

What is the point of making an M if there aren't visual and performance based differences?

Can you imagine the F80 without the hips and aggressive stance? Those are my favorite bits!

I'm more interested in the white vehicle next to the X4M. Is that an X3M in Alpine white?

Were people really expecting flared fenders on the X4 M?
These comments remind me of the kind of remarks on the F90 M5 threads prior to debut.

Since when did BMW M ever give fender flares to the M5 or M SAVs?
I mean, at most, the recent M5s had wider front fenders but they were barely noticeable, and I wouldn't call them flared by any means.
Hell, even the M6 never got flared arches in any generation.
It's really only the M3 and spiritual derivatives (1M, M2, M4) received such treatment.

Not sure if it's a bad pic or not but it doesn't look like the car has been widened very much.

outside of looking like the MB, I like the smooth taillights. this class of cars is very similar in design.

Really hoping BMW hits the sweet spot on these, my impressions so far:

Macan Turbo with perf
$100k with basic options
Hell of a car but way too expensive and heavy for its size

MB 63/S
Hate looks of their coupe and no S version in non coupe. Boring looking exteriors, raw power as usual also too high of price (over $90k for S)

Alfa Quad
Best "deal" out there. Low $80s with options, amazing performance when it works...
Think exterior looks great, inside falls short of the competition and of a $80k+ car.

Jaguar SVR
Too early to tell, looks promising, would have to deal with awful interface though

BMW might be on lower end of power numbers like Macan but they might understate numbers more than others as they usually do and the weight could be a big factor. The MB and Porsche are really heavy (4500 lbs) hoping BMW comes in around 4300.

I would say that this trend has been more common in the recent Ms that you mentioned, and the X5/6, for all their respective faults, at least look beefier and distinct from their regular series counterparts. Especially with wider rear tires and whatnot.

I think people just expected more visual differentiation, beyond the quad exhaust and mirror type differences (myself included).

Is that right....?

MB unveils the GLE coupe Jan 2015 at the NAIAS.
These brand new redesigned taillights on the X4 are straight up lifted from MB.

That's cool but the key is that there is zero precedent for this on an M SAV so I'm really not sure where this expectation (of flared fenders) is coming from.

This thing will cost substantially more than a Macan GTS... and I know where I’d put my money any day!!

+1 it's funny to see people expect something that's never happened before and then get all upset over the fact that what they expected to happen didn't actually happen.
