Post iDrive Screen Blank / Black

Apologies if this topic has been covered guys, I searched "idrive" but the results were usually about how to update the maps or the screen rebooting itself.

My issue is, the screen is blank/black, it does not appear to have any power. I dont get any radio.

  • I checked fuse #125, the one next to the CD icon
  • I checked fuses 13, 31, 43, 44, 105, 118, 120, 126, 170, 185, 190, numbers next to the head unit icon.

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

KEY INFO, that I should provide:

As of last friday, I installed an aftermarket screen and things are working (minus audio)

I reversed the installation, to access the aux ports, to connect an aux cable to said aux ports.

(the manual suggests if there is no audio, try connecting an aux cable to the aux port in the arm rest)

After I put it all back together, I now get a blank screen .... uh oh

So I put it all back to stock and removed everything aftermarket .... screen is still blank/black ...

Possible a wire got loosened during the transition and pulled away (even slightly) from the plug, perhaps?
(or bent/broken wire maybe got pinched?)

Hoping for something identifiable for you.. and repairable...
(as opposed to hardware issue)

Was the vehicle battery disconnected during your install / un-install, etc?

Same exact thing happened to me this week. Does the key chime also not work? If so then my problem was a 20 amp fuse in the trunk area. It was one of the last ones all the way on the bottom. I changed it out and everything seems to be working. Sorry I do not remember the exact one.

To fix my aux problem I was going to run the line but I hit the voice button my steering wheel and it then said aux activated and everything started working.

Hope this helps

totally possible I damaged a wire back there.

I'll go back and inspect the wires/harness, i'll report back.

and the battery was not disconnected during the install, something i sadly overlooked.

appreciate the reply!

the key does not chime anymore, so it seems my situation is similar to yours

I pulled/inspected all of the 20 amp fuses on the bottom row in the trunk, and they all looked good.

No progress, but I will share pics of when I was digging around back there

Is there any smarter approach to this, other than poking around?

I could not find any obvious signs of damage

(unless its right in front of my face and I missed it, which is totally possible)

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!

As long as all your wires into your plugs are secure / and all your pins are still straight - - there's not much more to checking the plug and wire connections that I'm aware of. Finding one bent in half, frayed, or loose from the socket are the obvious tells.

I know when I put mine in, there was some pretty unique and somewhat aggressive maneuvers I had to finagle to get the head unit reseated all the way back into the dash.
This was my initial concern that something may have gotten stressed back there when I saw your post.

Checking every fuse whether it looks related or not is an option, of course.

Also - and I'm being serious and not an ass when I mention this - but - - have you tried to reboot your idrive system yet? Holding in the radio power button for 30 seconds, releasing, and then pressing the power back 'on' again? (engine NOT running, just the ACC/ON position of the ignition during this reset)

I would double and triple check the fuses I told you about. When I removed it, it also looked good but confirmed it was bad only after using a test light.

SO .... in a strange turn of events, now I'm stuck at the bmw logo, and I did use your reset method. It does reboot iDrive but it takes me back to the bmw logo

I googled the topic and the f30 forums suggest, a software update or replacement of head unit is the common fix.

Does anyone have input?

As always, much appreciated everyone!
