Radar Detector fuse box hardwire

Starting this thread as the title is a little more suggestive of the contents/question.

There is this thread that but didn't really go anywhere
https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1969790

Has anyone hardwired a RD into the front fuse box? I can't seem to find instructions anywhere. I'd like to mount the detector in the left lower window so I'm going to have to figure out where to run the cable to get it there.

blend mount under mirror is the best option
use fuse 46 or 47 with add-a-fuse
it is keyed to ignition and will shut down about 5 min after engine off.

I added pics to the glovebox thread you pinged me on.

Thanks. I know up high under the mirror is the best spot for detecting but I prefer it down out of the way in the left lower corner. I still seem to get decent reception there.

it is illegal in many states to “mount” anything to the windshield so the mirror mount insures you’re not violating any codes.

Thanks for the fuse numbers as well. Looks like those are the 2 to use. I also found this site to get a map of your fuses. Just put in your VIN.

Mounting to the windshield is a problem in some states, but mounting to the rear view mirror is fine. Not sure why...

I suppose because it could fall off the window and cause an accident? Where as its more likely bolted onto the mirror.

Here are the illegal states. Looks like I'm safe in Ohio.

Thanks to info from element56 and a few others I was able to tap the fuse, run and hide the wires, not get electrocuted or have the airbag go off in my face while I was under the seat, only two trips to the auto parts store for a different fuse tap, and in the end it all works!

Some tips from the experience. I used fuse 46 where there is already the 20a fuse. Make sure when you go buy your add a fuse that you get the correct size. They initially sold me one that was too small and after I had the car apart and fuse out I had to drive back to the autoparts store for the larger one.

when using an add-a-fuse the piggyback should be less amperage than the primary. ie if primary is 20 use a 15 or lower.

Are you talking in general or about the comment I made about getting the right size. They sold me one initially that was physically too small to fit in the slot. But I think I used a 7.5 or 10 in the add a fuse slot

Just did mine using the fuse tap (large) and fuse 46. Routed wire up A pillar, along window and done.
Hardest part was looking upside down at fuse panel.
Did have to disable Laser so Gesture control didn't set it off.

just a general comment for those reading this. the concept here is that the lower amp fuse will blow first and if any issues that would affect the larger amp fuse would take both circuits down safely.

there are mini and normal sized fuses as well. bummer they sold you too small first.

Thanks, yea, it was a good learning process. The next car will go much smoother.

I was going to do that but I wanted to put mine in the left lower side of the window and I couldn't find a cable that was long enough to do the mirror tap to run all the way down there. Most of the mirror tap cables are only a foot long at the most.

i would just warn that the lower the detector, the lower its field of vision and it could detract from its performance

Yea, I recognize that there is potentially some sacrifice putting it in the lower left but I like it down there and out of the way. I've had it there for years in the past and still seem to get plenty of warning but I recognized that It may be a bit of a compromise to having it up high in the middle of the window. Even watching the vortex radar video where he compares radar placement he put it down there and talked about how he thought maybe it would be less sensitive but didn't really have any hard evidence showing that it was less sensitive
