Is this a dealer update? I use google maps anyway but it would be nice to update as a backup.

Should be OTA with iDrive 7 on sp 18 hardware. Not available OTA on the X3. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I thought maps were OTA but major software updates are not OTA for the X3 which has the sp15 hardware...

Will the dealer load the newer maps at the next service? Is there a charge for the entire map update??

Well this thread exploded haha.

There are two ways to get map updates, available to all with a connected drive license.

- Over the air
- via usb.

The usb ones come out first - you can download them directly from bmw using their download manager from the website (at least you can in Europe i think there's been confusion about this for the USA).
Dealers/ indies can also download this onto a usb using an internal program from AOS ( their backend site ). It's a 30gb download of all the maps.

Then there's ota updates - all our cars should have this but the updates usually take longer to appear than the Usb ones. A lag of 1-4 weeks because they don't roll out to 💯 of the cars at once. They are a lot smaller - it only downloads the changes for your local subregion region. In the uk, that means you could end up with;
Europe 2020-4
Gb/ie 2021-2

I always go the usb route as it's handy for updated maps when driving to other countries. Only takes 20mins to download and another 20 to install in the car ( using a 1Gb fibre connection and a ssd of course hehe)

Checked the BMW Download manager, but it still says Europe Live 2020-4 is the latest. Any link to the Europe Live 2021-2 maps?

I think its important to specify if this option works in the USA?
From my understand (not confirmed) we would need a dealer visit.
And we know how useless that is, dealer will never find a iDrive update just like the Nav update.
Unless you totally offer to go and pretty much buy it.
Majority of us dont want to keep buying updates and they are not free from the dealer as they are very quick and crazy simple on a OTA update.

Unfortunately I'm UK based, so I've no idea what you have to do in the states !

All I know is that the option exists for free over here

I've tried using the download manager but it says my car is not compatible. Is that because I have idrive 7?

In USA the only way is a USB or getting it updated at the dealer. Regardless, if you have 2019 or 2020 maps almost nothing is going to change unless you live in a brand new complex or try visiting a brand new shopping center or new road. A navigation update is far less priority to me than a regular vehicle software update.

Just checked in the map settings in my 2020 X3 30e. There is a box checked for maps to download automatically when available. The maps I have now are:

- Road Map NORTH AMERICA Live 2019-3
- CA, HI, VA, 2020-4

Looks like the OTA updates haven't become available yet. When I went to manually update, there was nothing available.

Update: included a screenshot from my BMW ConnectedDrive account and I'm subscribed to automatic map updates, so it should update once it's available.

Yeah, not thrilled about having 2019 maps in 2021, especially in a city that has been building lots of new roads. Let me know if you figure anything out. Suggestions of downloading directly from BMW onto a USB stick doesn’t seem to be available for those of us in the US. At least not that I’ve found.

Ok, spoke to a tech person/"genius" at a dealership and got an update. Looks like I have been getting OTA updates, but ONLY for the region. Since I'm in California, my region consists of California, Nevada, and Hawaii (CA, HI, NV). He said that the 2020-4 is the most up to date map. As for the national map (North America 2019-3), he says the dealership would have to do that (or I'd have to pay for it and download it). And depending on the dealership, I might or might not get charge.

Oh, well. I'll ask to get the full map update when I have to take my car in, but the regional updates will do for now. But it's mostly fine since I prefer Google Maps through CarPlay...it just looks a whole lot better than the BMW version.
