You need to go to the dealership. No remote updates with the G01/G02 platform.

Do you know anyone who has tried it yet?

BMW has actually said otherwise ... but we'll see.

I'm waiting to see one get an update to 20-07. It's not often a car less than 1 year old is getting programmed unless it's for something else or a module replacement.

I took mine in today specifically for the update. Service advisor said he heard something about Android auto, mentioning that the service manager would know more. A few hours later got a call that the car was ready. Android auto is working with my pixel 4. Still playing around with it.

I'm taking my X3 M40i in tomorrow for about the 5th time to fix rattles. I've asked specifically for the firmware to be updated to latest, even though the dealership tends to frown on updating if there isn't a technical reason for it. I just bought 2 cars from them in spring so they should give me some leeway.

EXCELLENT! You may be the first. Keep us posted. I'm especially interested to know whether Google Maps nav instructions show up in the IP and HUD.

I dropped mine off this morning to finally get the update to fix my surround view. We will see what version I end up with. I inquired about the July update, but couldn't get a definitive if they already had it loaded.

A quick review of my experience so far:
Connectivity:
initially, had trouble getting my phone to connect. On the phone it said "looking for android auto" as a notification, but could not get it to work. Had to remove the connected app from my phone, delete the phone in idrive and re-pair it. This may have been specific to my phone as my wife's pixel 3 opened android auto first time with no issues.

When starting the car, sometimes it opens AA automatically, sometimes not. I think I need my phone unlocked for it to open, so I'll try setting up smartlock so it unlocks when connected to bluetooth. The car needs to be running or with a single press of the start button to turn on all connectivity, if you try to open AA while only with accessory power, it doesn't work and doesn't explain why. Generally, if it can't open AA, there are no helpful error messages or indications why it isn't working so that can be frustrating.

Screens:
Looks good, nice layout on the wide center display with a large map and details on the current media. HUD and instrument display has basic directions with an arrow, distance and street name. We lose the lane diagrams and mini-map that BMW nav provides. Instrument display still has media description and album art. Media list loses the ability to scroll through the playlist in the HUD.

Interaction:
AA responds to hey google, or you can trigger it with a long press of the voice button. Regular idrive responds to a short press. Idrive controller is nicely integrated with AA, pushing/turning the wheel moves the selection as expected. Media, comm, nav, back, etc buttons switch between screens. It's easy to go back to idrive via the menu button if needed.

Quirks:
A few bugs where spotify would pause itself and need to be toggled to keep playing.
On one short trip the HUD said calculating route while the center display showed the proper directions.
Somehow I'm now subscribed to the new traffic camera information for the next 10 days only, not sure if this is related to the idrive upgrade?

So I would like to confirm that this was not available for you before the update? And after a dealer visit it is available?

Yes, an update at the dealer is required.

Aside from the new Android Auto capability, have you tested out any of the other additional features of the iDrive software update?

Here is the best list of new features I could find: http://www.bimmerfile.com/2020/07/02...d-digital-key/

BMW Maps: Looks mostly the same to me. Route calculation does seem to be quite a bit faster with the cloud connectivity, but I don't see much change other than that.

Connected Charging: N/A

BMW Digital Key: We don't have the hardware

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant: Confirmed the new graphics that point to the driver as I speak. Opening windows/sunroof doesn't work. Changing the drive mode works

Thanks for sharing. i just had my car updated for an issue with Sirius, I'm not sure what was updated to be honest and the dealer had no idea on when Android Auto would be available. One thing I noticed since I got my car back about a week ago that you mentioned in your post is that my phone is calling up a notification for Android Auto trying to connect. I tried what you suggested but I am unable to get Android Auto to show up on the screen. I'm wondering if there is a way to check what update version you have in iDrive and if I have the update but just cant get the phone to connect? I have an S20+ which is compatible with wireless AA.

Thanks.

I know it's a long shot but any chance they added remote updates in the setting menu?

Another long shot . . . I'm wondering whether Waze nav instructions also show up in the IP and HUD.

"The highlights of the Android Auto at BMW are the seamless and wireless integration and the intelligent adoption of turn-by-turn guidance from Google Maps™ in the instrument cluster’s Info Display as well as in the Head-Up Display."

From the release notes it seems that the HUD can use Google Maps but only from AA and Apple Carplay. :'(

Yes! IP and HUD have directions from Waze, same as Google Maps.

If you are getting the notification on your phone, you must have the right version. What have you tried in idrive? Should need to go Apps -> Android Auto -> select your phone to pair and follow the prompts. Are you getting an error during pairing?

FABULOUS! So there may be hope that we can get it with CarPlay as well. Great news.
