Random thoughts:

1) That rear fascia on the X4 LCI is an absolute disaster. Gross.
2) The new front fascia on the lower model X3 looks way better than the one on the M40i, which is strange.
3) Really dislike the new X3 tail lights...way too busy of a design.

There are some questionable aesthetics on the LCIs, but that's personal preference. However, there are several very surprising historical aspects of these LCIs ...

The M double-slatted grille, M grille badge and M mirrors have made their way down to non-M vehicles for the first time. BMW's pretty consistent with these things, so I presume it's a sign of things to come. The M guys will not be happy.

This is probably the most extensive LCI interior update ever. The E60 LCI interior was a significant (and needed) upgrade. This change is much more significant and less needed imo.

I'm surprised that the 12.5" central display has made its way down to the X3/4. The 3/4 LCI will surely include the larger screen now or maybe they'll go full iD8 for that upgrade since LCI interior's are much more significant now.

The X4's taillights were not updated. I don't recall any BMW LCI that has not had at least some minor change to the taillights. Fwiw, I happen to love the old X4's taillights, so I'm not upset.

No silver exterior paint. Is there another car in BMW's lineup that doesn't include the German national racing color?

Has cerium been euthanized? That would be welcome retreat for many of us, I'm sure.

A few more thoughts:

1. Perhaps BMW is retiring the 30e in the US to save their remaining allotment of federal tax credits for the coming i4 and iX to make those vehicles more enticing to potential buyers?
2. They had to do a major interior refresh. Many vehicles will be getting iDrive 8 over the next few years and the x3 was sporting a very old interior compared to the rest of the BMW lineup. If they didn't update to the latest interior the X3 would be two generations behind most of the lineup by the time of redesign -- and the X3 is their best seller in the US. Some of the competitors in this space have some really fantastic interiors that made the current X3 look somewhat dated, too (I think a great example here is the Mercedes GLB).

For those talking about the "major" interior refresh, the odd thing to me is that BMW only really updated the center console/stack. They still left the legacy dash, door cards, door pulls, etc. I understand that it was probably a cost decision, but it makes for an oddly disjointed interior now IMO.

that was my first thought - they forgot to redesign the door!

I didnt see the Executive package either, just the premium package. It looks like they moved a lot more items as "a la carte".

Yes, the door pulls don't really match the hexagonal trim in the AC ducts. But it is still quite a big update compared to the previous LCIs.

Looking at the options bundling, the reason to custom order has decreased. Most of the options, like adaptive, people would custom order for are now available in standard packages.

The press release says
Quote:
On the X3, the interior is available in Black, Canberra Beige, Cognac and Tacora Red SensaTec colors. An optional Vernasca leather interior is available in Black, Oyster and Mocha. The X4 M40i includes available Vernasca leather in Canberra Beige/black, Tacora Red and Cognac.

The press release also mentioned that the sensatec seating surfaces were perforated, which leads me to believe that they did this to allow ventilated sports seats. We shall see in the next few months!

If this is correct, Mocha leather has made a comeback. On the other hand Cognac and Beige leather only available on X4 M40i. Maybe too many people were ordering the Cognac!

The interior changes look good, the new center console is clean. The red leather option is very nice (too bad it's not available on the X3). The addition of adaptive suspension as a standard option is huge.

I'm not a fan of the exterior changes at all (except for the M mirrors). The base X3 front end actually looks better to me than the front end of the M40i. The rear of the X4 in particular is just weird.

They did a better job on the exterior styling of the new X3M. Although I prefer the current front end of the X3M, the new front end looks much better than the new front end of the M40i.

For all of you that waited for the LCI and like the changes, I'm very happy for you and look forward to seeing pics when you take delivery!.

I wonder if they made any changes to the spare tire raised floor in the trunk for X3. Likely not.

I'm a little leery of the 48 volt mild hybrid system. Seems like it's aimed at fleet mileage per gallon, and of little other use. I wish it wasn't standard on the 6 cylinder. That was a great power plant that didn't need to be messed with. Looks like higher maintenance costs down the road with little payback. Please help me change my mind on this.

It's already on the B58 on the X5 and people love that engine on that platform too. It's probably going to be fine.

Although, I believe the intro of the 48V mild hybrid means you lose the ability to turn off ASS (Auto Start Stop) via a button.
