New recall for X3 with N20 engine

Just got an email from BMWUSA about a recall on my wife's 2016 X3 with the N20 engine. Looks like it's emissions related and requires an ECU code update.

I got that recall notice too, not sure i'm going to get it done. Car has been working great since 2016. Why mess with it when its a voluntary recall.

It could be polluting the environment or causing slow damage to some emissions control equipment or something else. They don't really give much detail on what it's fixing.

Next time I bring the car in for oil change, they'll likely do the recall at that time.

Sounds like a de-tune. lol.

Gonna be a fucking headache to take the car in for this.

This is what im worried about LOL. The car is slow enough as it is. But if it fixes the quite-a-bit-lower-than-epa MPG that would be great!

Also wondering if they're flashing the whole car vs just the DME. I have a lot of coding done that I don't want to redo.

I had the same same recall also for my 2014 X3. It takes 2-4 hrs for them to update the module. Pro: maps looks updated with new interference, Cons: if you coded your idrive in the past, it'll be wiped out

Since the multiple modules in the vehicle are set up in a tree type configuration with dependencies, my guess is all modules that need updating get flashed to ensure compatibility, not just the dme

Voluntary Emissions update Information

For all of you that have the aftermarket Apple car play installed,be aware as I found out at the dealer that the software will be deleted when the emissions update is done. I reached out to Bimmertech and they would have to re install this software.

Just got mine done yesterday. Took them about 2.5hrs (quoted 30min to 2hrs) It's a whole i-step update so it wiped all my coding except VO coding. Bimmercode did not recognize the car as the same so it wouldn't load backups.
Also, if you have a 2014 model and don't have Siri Eyes-Free (long hold speech button to activate siri) or the volume pop-up— they are available to code now! Some icons are new. The trip computer is notably completely different now. Menu transitions are much faster too.
I can't tell a difference in driving yet.

I just installed the Bimmertech MMI but it was plug and play. What software would they have to reinstall?

Emissions update

My dealer mentioned that any aftermarket software will be deleted such as the Apple Car play/MMI updates,if you do the emissions update. The software would have to be reinstalled through a Bimmertech vendor afterwards. I am holding out until my emissions light goes off and I am forced to do this upgrade

Just had this recall taken care of 2 days ago. I can confirm they will update the car's I-Level. It took them 2 hours to update my car, it is now on F025-21-11-535.

According to my trusted service advisor, the engine is running too lean and making higher levels of CO than should be. I was worried that they would screw up a good thing. After reading this forum, I’m less worried.
I got recalls for 2013 528i and my 2017 X3.

If it was running too lean and they are reprogramming to run a bit richer, does that mean it's going to use more fuel thus making the mpg worse?

Took mine in this morning for the recall, and soon got the text with my free inspection results with two "Critical" items - a new drive belt and oil filter housing gaskets for the low, low price of $1,006.00. Even BMW branded parts are only about $100 and those are easy jobs on an N20. Guess I'll go to dinner with the $900 I'll save.
