BMW and grilles is this naturally good looking girl you know who discovered lip enhancement and every time you ran into her its getting more and more into uncanny valley.
Fak. why they do this to grilles. I just came back from Geneva motor show and I spent a lot of time at Alfa Romeo stand admiring Giulia and Stelvio cars, and barely glimpsed at the modern creations BMW put out. The 5 series is nice enough, interior of 7 is cool, and the M2 is sick. But the M8 left me quite bemused, I dont get whats all the fuss is about. It looks cartoonish and everything is over the top.

My current F26 X4 M40i definitely will start selling more now after this horrific G02 mistake. If they don't fix this for the X3M/X4M *RIP*

The front of the new X4 is definitively a step back. Rest looks good and dynamic.
But the older front looked more special and more aggressive, those kidneys are growing more and more, just to much in my opinion, the car looses its dynamic. The eye is focusing to much on them and the other details get lost. Hope they will get this and come back from these extreme grow for all next model ranges, otherwise we have years of not so appealing cars in front of us.... However, my opinion, there are for sure people that like this evolution... |

Just don't like either of them. Agree that the grills are way OTT on the new one. Nice detailing inside though.

Nice comparison video, they should do that more often.
I find it totally absurd especially for the price of these vehicles that the digital dashboard is "optional", it should be standard!!! But I do like that the panoramic moonroof is "optional" because that is something we definitely do NOT want and would rather put the money elsewhere. I especially hope it is optional on the U.S. version! |

Totally agree. They’re trying way too hard. One of the latest design trends I’ve noticed though is automakers are going for massive grilles and little headlight designs. Personally I don’t get it but can’t blame BMW for appeasing the masses.

Shhhhhh you’re not supposed to like it because it looks good but because it’s “the all-new X4”. If I hear the term “all-new” one more time I’m jumping off a building.

Moving the rear licence plate to the bumper allows for carrying loads with the lift gate open, without obscuring the plate.

Its almost as if BMW has to put out these videos to justify the new design/car.
The front shot no matter how you look at it the old one is better which isn't exactly a looker to begin with. Somehow BMW managed to make it look worse with the buck tooth kidney grills. Love how they compare the side shots with one car wear much bigger/sportier wheels As for the rear they are both unimpressive. I guess if i had to choose the new one is slightly better in that regard. Alan

As others have said the front is a bit off on the G02. The grilles are too big, headlights are too bubbly, and the removal of the round fog lights make it look weird. The back is straight Mercedes IMO. Looks like the GLE but with more narrow tail lights. The F26 wasn't the best but is way better than the G02 on the interior. The new tech is nice but the huge iPad shoved into the dash screen look still doesn't do it for me.

I think that's true with X6 as well, the first gen E71 looks more aggressive compare F16, regardless non-M or M versions.
But I'll check how the X4M Gx would look like for sure when it comes out. The only reason I am worried my E71 50i engine is not going to last more than 2 years from now so need to replace it. |

Wonder if Chris Bangle input being an American, is lost in the current BMW SUV/SAV design; well American culture is what drives the SUV craze of late.
industrial-designer is really a cultural thing, just like no-one seems to be able to figure out why European furniture looks good compare to any other furniture out there. Maybe Adrian Von Hoydonk needs to live in the Midwest for a while |

Yep ... the front grille on the older generation looks better ...but time will smooth that over i guess. The bigger kidney grills do serve a function along with the air intakes in the front.
The rear is slightly better in the new model though. More torque in the newer engines - so thats a BIG PLUS ! The review did not touch on driveability but apparently its much better in the newer model... Overall the new X4 is better - better drivability ! |
