KM Display

Same issue here - brand new 2020 X3 with base display. Glad to see I'm not the only one. Haven't taken it in for service, I've had the car for less than a week. BMW Genius had no advice though.

In the UK I've hit exactly the same problem.

Response from local dealer:

Thank you for your letter dated 12th February 2020, and I apologise it has taken me a week to respond. Naturally I wanted to look into your issue prior to replying and I hope you don’t mind the reply coming via e-mail, but I thought it may be better than keeping you waiting longer.

I have discussed the issue you are facing with our aftersales manager Dan Gregory, who I have copied into this e-mail. Dan was already aware of the complaint and the current response from the technical team at BMW, which unfortunately has not changed since we last investigated this situation. In regard to your third paragraph it most definitely isn’t a unique fault to your vehicle, and at this stage is a characteristic of the display on the X3, with the main speedo displaying the MPH and the smaller digital figure being in KPH. Whether this is changed in the future via a software update for the model is something for BMW to decide, and unfortunately not something we can influence at our level.

In conclusion, your letter has been pinned up in the office, and should an appropriate update be forthcoming you will be the first to know. In addition to this, we have sent your e-mail and our reply into BMW customer services in case there are other owners raising the same concern.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention and I hope this irritation doesn’t detract too greatly from your overall enjoyment of your X3.

Did anyone ever get an official TSB/SIB number to reference for this issue?

Recap - 2020 base model, no HUD, had digital speedo (not speed just speed limit sign, but actual digital speedometer read out) when I bought it. Problem was it always went to KPH when restarted, even if you changed it in iDrive to MPH.

Took it to dealer and they REMOVED the digital speedometer completely. They say they don't have a way to fix it and give me the feature that was on the car when I bought it.

Thanks!

I'm not aware that they actually fixed it. I fixed mine using Bimmercode.

There is a fix with 20-03 software. Programming update and conversion to add "conversion to digital speed." For anyone not in US, this will permanently display MPH. You will no longer to be able to display KPH digitally.

Thanks! Just to confirm, when I call my dealer again, should I reference 20-03 software update?

Just have them search for the SIB using the wording. They will be able to find it if they filter "G01" and term "speed". Shouldn't take more than a minute for any knowledgeable person who searches for SIBs

Units not saved?

I just purchased a new 2020 X3. I have the option to enable the digital speedometer and change the units to mph. However, every time I turn the car off the units reset to km/h. Anyone else have this issue, or know of a fix?

See above from freshxdough. Looks like he figured it out. That'll give you some guidance to talk to your dealer.

Problem is, when you turn car off for more than 1 minutes, and restart, it's back to KMs. Have to change it again in units.

My dealer says instrument cluster needs to be replaced. To me, its very clearly a software thing. So I won't be going to that dealer if they want to tear apart the dash on my 3 week old car.
Same issue here, SOOOOOO annoying

There's a software error in the cluster. Take it back to the dealer to have it fixed. Its under the retrofit digital speedometer to MPH.

Hi same issue here for my 2020x3 too. Did you figure out the fixes?
