X3M X4M gets iDrive 7 starting April

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
From Bimmertoday (German)

Translation:

Last autumn, the iDrive system in BMW X3 G01 and X4 G02 was brought to the current OS 7.0 without much ado, and now the M models F97 and F98 are following: From April 2020, the power SUV BMW X3 M and X4 M a major infotainment update. As with the 5 Series, the facelift is not waited for, instead the changeover is carried out without any noticeable changes as a model maintenance measure with the new model year.

In addition to the new iDrive technology on the infotainment display, the change to OS 7.0 also means a new look for the instrument display. We can already guess what the display behind the steering wheel will look like from the example of the big brothers X5 M and X6 M. Our little graphic gimmick already shows the displays there with the logo of the BMW X3 M, because apart from the model designation, the X3 M and X4 M are likely to continue to use the digital speedometers of the big brothers. It remains to be seen whether the two power SUVs will also receive the new M setup logic that was introduced with the M8.

The objectively more important changes, however, take place on the central infotainment display, where the BMW Live Cockpit ConnectedDrive ensures that the tile design of the previously installed system is abandoned. Also completely new is the voice control, which can be activated with the push of a button using “Hey BMW”. The activation word BMW can also be replaced by any other word if the driver would like to address the digital assistant with a different name.

Various pads with live content can be placed relatively freely on the large infotainment display, so that each customer can adapt the system to their own preferences. Just like before, all functions can be controlled both by iDrive controller and by touching the touch screen. Gesture control is also available for some other functions, which works with simple hand movements in the area in front of the display.

I do like the current cluster, it's the same as M5

Analog feels better

Will miss the analog dial, they should at least give us options for digital analog display. Otherwise will have to wait till the BimmerCode people comes up with a solution.

Anyone know if this will be available as an update to the 2020 M models? Maybe via software update?

Or only on newly purchased models after April?

The "Hey BMW" function is pretty useful (have it on my X7). Also, this is a boon for us Android Auto users.

Not looking forward to this. Love the current layout. Love the dials. It's a good look. Modern and classic at the same time

I'm currently in a loaner x3 30i and it has the new "tech" and I'm at not feeling it at all. Unless they can kind of replicate what's in the m8 it's gonna be a hard pass for me. Will stick with my current x3m

No. Totally different hardware.

ID6 is dead technology. The hardware and software has totally changed.

Newer versions is where you will find Android Auto in the future when supported.

It's subjective but this new version is sooo busy and overwhelming at first glance. Hanging onto my f80 because I love the analog dials.

Still waiting for BMW to actually let us customize their digital gauges like almost every other manufacturer. I would like some sort of proper tachometer whether it be digitally center mounted, on the side, or resembles analogue gauges, etc. This current digital gauges setup is not good.

Whether the new idrive is better or not, personally it would piss me off to get a new 2020 car for the idrive to become outdated 2 months later when the technology was available in the first place.

That's kinda cool. I did think it was strange that the X3M/X4M were the only 2020 models with the older idrive.

Had same issue with the Golf R. Redesigned in '15. I found one and traded my GTI in. 2016 model got all new radio, bigger screen, android auto, etc. It didn't matter to me much since I didn't buy the car for the radio. Same thing with the X3M. I didn't buy it because of the radio, but annoying nonetheless. Good thing I only leased it.

Hey BMW
How about offering to your clients the ability to -really- customise.
For example a toggle between "old" dials and the "new" layout ?
Then you keep all clients happy !
And ASD on or off toggle in Idrive ?

I'm all for the latest tech, but the current "old-school" instrument cluster looks much better than the refresh IMO.

We knew this timeline before the 2020 X3M and X4M were even able to be ordered. Those who wanted to wait for ID7, waited, those who didn't care already have their vehicles.
