New Owner X3 2012
Hi Everyone,
I’m purchasing my mums X3 2012 X3. She’s owned it for 5 years and never really had any bother with it. A friend has made me have second thoughts as he said the timing chains frequently go on these. We currently do like a 6 month CBS so only really ever had new cars so never keep them long enough to worry about servicing or MOT etc. The engine sounds ok like there’s no rattling or anything. It’s done 86,000 and 12 year old. Would you bite the bullet and change the chain now or is there signs it will go beforehand such as the rattle etc? Would really appreciate some help on this as we were looking forward to having a bigger car. Thanks! Rich |

The 2011/2012 N52/N55 engines are pretty robust. It’s the early 4 bangers that the timing chains went bad. Although there is a recent recall for the VANOS bolts on the N52

I could be wrong, but outside the US, besides the N52/N55, they were also offered in 20i, 18d, 20d, 30d, & 35d models
