2017 CPO I got last year is getting close to its oil change service internal, caller dealer and i got quoted $180 for an oil change.

This is my first bimmer, ( actually wify's ) so i am not familiar on what is a decent price.

However, I do work on cars myself and taking a car in for an oil change anywhere would be sacrilegious...
Just a quick search on Amazon, MANN filter $8 ( or $14 if its BMW branded, same filter ). $23 for 5 quarts LL01 Castrol. ( Would need two jugs, with a few quarts to spare. No more than $60 in parts..

Now, i do worry about the warranty and watnot, will BMW give me grief if they don't show the car been serviced in their system?

I do my own change buy car out of warranty- I read that Dealers often run things like $95 oil/filter change specials.

Since you have CPO best to check maint requirements and abide to insure warranty coverage not affected. Any shop or you should be good to go, just use BMW spec'd oil and filter.

I've been charged $140, but I think rates are a little lower in CO than where you are which explains the difference.

Do it yourself and keep a reasonable log of every oil change. They cannot void the warranty if you change your own oil.

I've spent nearly that, I believe, for Diesel. Which is pricier. With diesel, also have to do the DEF. I may figure out how to do that on my own sometime.

As others have said, keep a maintenance log and receipts showing oil and filter purchase. $180 seems a bit on the high side, but since I always change my own oil I have no idea what a reasonable charge for the service might be.

most mechanics won't do much profit on oil change, but @ 180$ yeah for sure.

hengst filter is about 10$
5L liqui moly 5w-40 is about 50$ (you need 2 of them since N55 takes 6.X L)

But for me is the time, it took about 30-45 minutes to do a oil change. Way less than get ready to go to the dealer, go to the dealer, wait for the oil change, then go back home.

Also, BMW won't complain about my magnetic drain plug since its not OEM... Magnetic drain plug can be a good indicator for rod bearing deterioration or other issues.

Hey thanks for all the feedback.

Another thing, I was looking at the service status in the iDrive menu, there is another item that will be due at the same time as the oil change: "Vehicle Check".

Is that something that always goes along with the oil change or is an entire different service? I did some research and its some visual checks + hooking it up to OBDII ( which i can do easily, even have ISTA+ on a laptop )

Looks like this will be more hassle than it needs to be, leaning heavily towards DIY.

I do my own oil changes and ALL other service.

wife's car I took to dealer until free maintenance expired.

my M3 I did all service since 1200 mile break in.

If for no other reason I fell better wrenching on the drain plug myself...even a good shop/mechanic, well we never know if they turn the wrench with appropriate force/torque. Threads in aluminum pan can be easily stripped.
