Leak from drivers side ceiling

Hi all, went to a car wash and felt a bunch of water dripping through the little vent thing above the driver's side. It's a 2020. I'm gonna take it to the dealer bc it's still under warranty, but to save me a trip, might it be something obvious? I've checked the sunroof, and it seems sealed. I'm gonna buy this car outta the lease, hopefully it doesn't mean anything major...

What is that for, anyway?

Yep it came from that... Well that's real strange. I guess I'll have to see if it's easy to check that. I keep the car garaged, so that'd be weird

Found a thread in the X5 forum, easier to search now that I know it's a mic

Off to the dealer she goes

Concerning that so many new and *not that old* X3’s are having this issue and it’s not due to blocked sunroof drains. Has to be a design flaw somewhere.

Finally got this into the dealer today. I'm trying to find the TB. They say it might not be covered under warranty since it could be a clog.

Have you checked the drain tube exits under the front door top hinges? I clean mine out each year with cotton buds.

Maybe a pipe cleaner would be better?

I had, but couldn't spot anything. If they want to charge me I'll probably just tell em not to. I'll find an indy close by or something

I think this is the SIB you were looking for.

The sunroof drains are clogged, Ask them to blow them out. I had the same issue a few times, Now I blow them out myself when I do my oil changes. You will need access to a compressor and a blower/air nozzle, the hole is towards the corner of the sunroof casing (Open the sunroof fully). The trapped debris will come out thru the drains above the door hinge (keep door open while completing the process).

Same exact leak just happened to me. After a touchless car wash. Good bit of water came through microphone vent. Will take it to the dealer. 2022 and with hardly any miles. Interesting that mattsheng has a service bulletin showing a gap issue while Camnyc says it's clogged drains. Guess I'll find out. I just know sunroofs can be a bit of a pain and opening of pandoras box.

There are actually many causes of the leaking sunroof. The SIB I mentioned earlier is for earlier production models (production date Aug 2017 - Dec 2020). Here is a comprehensive diagnostic guide for sunroof issues. Maybe this will be helpful too.

instead of an air compressor is it possible to use a long stiff-ish wire or could that scratch the paint inside the drain?

There is no paint inside the drain. There is a plastic tube inserted into the drain hole and the drain tube can be clogged from time to time. You will probably need a pretty long wire to push through lol. The drain tube goes from the sunroof to the middle of the quarter panel.

Some say to use the nylon string from a Weed Wacker.

carefully poured a little water at each front corner of the sunroof. I could see it flow out of the drain tube near the door hinge. But.... it also came through the mic vent, and along the A-pillar interior trim. Dampened the fabric and even a few drops appeared at the bottom of the a-pillar.

Does that mean the drain could be partially blocked, or that I just poured too much water? There seems to be an opening directly above the mic, which could be where water enters the cabin. I wonder why they left that gap.

Couldn't push wire down the drain more than 2 inches. I need something stiffer. Has anyone tried a wire coat hanger (straightened out of course!)
