I agree & I'm aware of this. I never go near redline when cold. My E39 M5 had this simple feature & it's a good one to have.

I drove a 340 and M40i for a total of 4 years. I observed that the engine warm up time was pretty rapid, esp. for the M40i (I assume b/c of the grill vents that could open or close). On my commute, I'd be just a few minutes in and the engine would almost be to the middle of the temp range. The engine would hold that temperature for awhile when turned off, too - I'd come back from shopping and the engine would still be nearly at the same temp.

With the S58, it takes a good 5 minutes just to get up to the quarter mark, and 10-15 minutes of city driving to get to the mid range. The S58 cools off rapidly too. I'm WFH right now but if I had the same commute, half of it would be wasted on waiting for the car to warm up before I could have fun.

I assume the 340\M40 had an oil temp gauge as opposed to water temp. X3M is oil temp and takes forever to warm

Just got back from my 1200 mi break in service. Dealer did the oil change and front diff fluid change but evidently there’s a shortage of rear diff fluid. Gotta go back eventually. My receipt says forebodingly “no ETA” for the fluid. So make sure when you schedule your break in service your dealer has all the parts. I have a feeling dealers will tell you to come in for the oil change at the least.

SA says the front and rear diff fluids are different

I know the rear diff fluid change is required but is the front diff change also called for at the 1200 mile service?

SA said both diff fluids are changed at 1200 along with the engine oil

For what it's worth, I went back and looked at my break in service invoice and they did the rear diff only.

I didn’t think to check until now but it looks like oil change and washer fluid were the only services completed. Front diff is not mentioned. So either it’s not included and my SA was wrong or they’re waiting to do front and rear at the same time.

I had no idea the front diff used different oil & had to be changed at the same time. The front diff doesn't do a whole lot & doesn't generate the amount of hear the rear does. So wondering why BMW recommends changing both.

I think he misspoke. Ill see what’s done when the diff fluid comes in but as of 2020 only the rear is covered

2021 X3MC here. Engine oil and rear diff oil changed at 1200. That was it (based on the work order).

The F90 M5 2018/2019 model year was the only M car to get front diff oil changes at Run In Service. 2020 and forward removed front diff oil change front Run In Service.

The X3 M does not require a front diff oil change and I'm not sure if they misspoke or if they actually did it, but BMW NA won't pay for the front so they will definitely get debited that warranty claim lol.
