Actually like the rear a lot, its the front that just doesn't belong. If you cover the front you could imagine something amazing but then do a double take and it falls apart. Wouldn't be surprised if LCI tries to fix it soon as they get chance once they see customer feedback.

In meantime, that RED. I want to see it on a X3 40i now.

There is a captious mentality as of late and everyone always want to find something to dislike on a new product release. I have been very critical of BMW since I believe they have lost their touch and their uniqueness when it comes to driving dynamics. I wanted to dislike this car but the more you see it this is just a new design language that we have to get used to. It does have a very nice profile and stance and the taillights must be judged in person and not over a photo on the web.

The word 'differentiation' in this press release strikes me as ironic. BMW has focused so much to differentiate themselves from other brands that it has become nearly impossible to differentiate designs within the brand itself. It has blended all interiors to look nearly identical. It's very hard to tell apart from a 5-Series, X3, X2 and now X4 unless you have become an expert on it. I feel each vehicle should have its own unique feel inside and that's not the case any more. Same iDrive design, same steering wheel, same shifter, same cluster and very very similar dashboards and door panels.

And as far as differentiation, they should use that word carefully as they are becoming more and more the-new Audi. I have shifted my view of BMW as a luxury brand and see it more now as a Sport brand in the high-end segment. Mercedes-Benz has defined luxury in the high-end segment the past few years and its way ahead of BMW in that regard. BMW has become so good at trying to copy Audi's program that it has indirectly given Audi an edge. After all, they have dominated the AWD and 4-cyl turbo market for decades.

All in all, good refresh design and looks like a promising vehicle. Still not enough to persuade me to want it another BMW yet. Waiting for the new X5 and 850 to see.

That's funny, I've just counted 13 pics of the rear and personally to me the rear, especially the light clusters, are the best design element of the car!! It's about time BMW ditched their bulky, misaligned L shaped lights for some sleeker more modern ones such as these!!

Very good point, I actually love the rear lights compared to most of BMW's misaligned L shaped rear clusters... and these looked great on the white car in the spy shots! Personally I think this car will be extremely colour sensitive and may look a whole lot better in pale shades such as white, pale greys or silver (which will also show off those lights!)

I give credit where it's due. BMW has nailed it with the new X3 and now X4. These are the kind of designs I have been waiting to come back to BMW. Only thing I hate about the new X4 is that there will be no M40d for the American Market. Otherwise the car looks fantastic. Good job BMW! If this is the new design language of future BMW's then I'm probably going to just wait until the G90 M5 comes out before I get another M5.

So it's about 50/50 like/dislike at the mo! This car will look way better in the metal, on the road than it does here in one dimensional pictures, this is always the case!

I don't think the colour chosen for this launch is particularly good because, while it's a really nice colour (I love dark red metallic) it doesn't do this car's design any justice at all. The rear lights just disappear into the paint colour and it's just too strong a colour! A more subtle shade would make this car look really classy in IMO.

Looks good...better than previous version.
I test drove X3M40i...and really loved it. Very agile, drives like a car...seats are really good.....takes corners with less body roll. And the exhaust sounds amazing...X4 shd be similar in performance.

I also have been hyper critical of BMW lately, but I think this looks really nice in this trim, the back end is works and I think looks great, if a little too similar to the Mercedes, too bad they couldn't find a way to differentiate it a little more. Looks really nice with the lights on at night looking at it from the side and rear.

The interior on the other hand, looks like the interiors they've had for 10 years now. Minor updates at best, BMW needs to really step up the interiors make them more simple and modern.

Interestingly, I think the render with the more rakish windshield makes the car look better, I think if the X4, X6 etc want to be the sportier versions of the X3 & X5, they should consider sacrificing headroom for a sleeker look.

These design sketches look totally stunning, but design sketches always do! Hell even the design sketch for the 1970's Austin Allegro look good (even today) but that car, yes I had one, was possibly the ugliest car ever built!!

I agree they should cut down the roof and make them even lower, when people are choosing the sportier, less practical variant, do the job properly and give it the same look as the sketches!!

Out of fear of having my post deleted, I will not re-paste the link, but I will share my thoughts on the tail lights now that I've seen them.

They are not horrible and, in fact, look pleasing enough to the eye from a design standpoint. I still think they are a bit too skinny and overly simplistic (MB and Jag come to mind), especially from the straight-on rear view, but from the side and angle views, they are tolerable given the rest of the design looks sharp and makes up for it.
I think they added the new pics and deleted the post or maybe they just don't like the 'other' website

The rear end looks really good in initial sketches that is because the narrow taillights speak with the small height of the rear end.

I feel like the design was initially made with a narrow rear end and then the engineering team had to increase the height of the rear end for better trunk capacity and other practical reasons. So they ended up with narrow taillights as initially designed and an overall high rear end.

This doesn't affect the rear 3/4 views that much, but the straight-on rear view looks weird because there is a lot more metal underneath the taillights than we are used to.
