X4 Diesel Sound

Hello,

So I know diesels are never going to sound amazing but practicality won when purchasing the X4 X30d (G02), however I'm missing that nice exhaust note.

Has anyone done anything to theirs that has made a noticeable positive difference (I'd like to remain legal so straight pipe is out).

A local place have recommended the Thor active exhaust system (the exhaust apeaker setups) but it just feels like cheating, equally I don't want to spend ridiculous money trying other options to not really gain anything.

Thanks in advance.

I suspect you won’t get a diesel to mechanically sound like a high revving performance petrol engine.

Personally, I like it quiet in the M40d, and even turn off the artificial ASD engine noise, as the fake sound of a petrol engine gets old real quick on long journeys. Couldn't care less what it sounds like of the outside.

There was a user on here (now goes by the handle of PaulsX3M40i) who created his own custom X3 30d exhaust. Not sure how much of the system he changed overall, but deffo the rear silencer. See if you can look him up.

There's a few Youtube videos out there of 530d's with straight pipes. TBH the exhaust sound of those is awesome, but very loud and probably not compliant in the UK MOT wise.

I came across a 2018 X5 30d the other day in Tesco that sounded very nice as it was reversing into a space. Looked pretty stock to me, but who knows. The thud thud thud of the straight six was much more audible than on mine.

Thank you I'll check those out.

Appreciate noise isn't to everyone's taste and don't get me wrong I'm not looking for obnoxious rattle your windows and set off other car alarms kind of noise, just a little more enjoyment out of the drive.

Registered 2019 (69 reg) so G02 model. I didn't think it had and double checked on the full technical specs from Bimmertech and next to ASD it says "no data"

Maybe it was standard from iDrive 7. It’s just a setting in the iDrive menu, and there’s an option to change ASD interior engine sound depending on driving experience mode. Basically sport sounds like a performance petrol engine.

I thought the ASD was only available M40i/d between 2018-1019. My 30d M Sport doesn't have it, but maybe on iDrive7 after 2019 it would have?

It’s definitely on my LCI M40d. It’s just a setting on iDrive 7 that enables the ASD fake interior engine sound to configured. In sport is sounds like a petrol performance engine and is pretty convincing lol.

Things changed with iDrive 7 because the RAM integrates the ASD functionality.

Powerflow exhausts do custom exhausts for the M40d, they have partners through out the UK, I can’t confirm sound or quality.

Same with Darkside Developments, they’re a renowned diesel tuning company in the UK.

Have you considered looking at intakes and blow off valves for some better sound? I recon the B57 will make some epic turbo sounds.
That would be a pretty good way to go, I can't imagine it being easy to get a nice diesel exhaust note.

I’ve not seen any performance intakes for the B57, unless the B58 intakes are compatible?
