Car wash ghosts

Have taken my X3 into the pressure wash (no touching) a few times and found the car locks and unlocks itself as its being washed.

Initially I thought this was the water pressure on the door handles, so tried to avoid this but it was still happening. However the last couple of times the rear door hatch also has automatically opened of its own accord when the car is being washed but not directly on the hatch.

So it seems that the water pressure is triggering a sensor somewhere on the car or getting somewhere that is causing a short?

Anyone had anything similar?

Do I have ghosts in the machine?

Keep the key in the car while washing.

I did handwash my car last week and nothing happened even when directly aiming with the pressure washer on the handles.

Is this the recommended fix or you are making a suggesting?

I would be reluctant to try this as I can envisage it deciding to lock itself with the key inside, for example if it is a short.

If I lock it, it opens and if I leave it open it locks.

My X3 will not lock if the the key fob inside and no one is in the car.

I had this happen with my F30 a few years ago - was on a road trip far from home at a car wash - the fob was in my pocket.

It also happens with the G01. I've never had the car lock me out as long as the fob is in the center of the car.

If you keep the fob in the side pocket of the door, BE WARNED - you can get locked out. Happened to me once. The rear hatch was open, but when my hand brushed the door handle, the car doors all locked. I had to crawl into the car from the rear hatch.

Anyway, I'm not sure what it is with the car wash, but I prefer to keep the fob in my pocket just to be sure.

Thats the recommended fix. There is a dedicated space for the key beside the wireless charging pad.

Had it this way for 2 hours while washing and cleaning, did not lock.

Our 550xi, 440xi and X3 M40 all do the same thing at the local DIY carwash - as does my Ram truck. ???

Yawn, this has been discussed many times before. Its not exclusive to BMW or any magical fairies while youre washing your car.

Happens with most vehicles with keyless entry. With my Audi I also need to keep the key in the house when I wash the car or it keeps doing that.

Garage List
I hand-wash at home, and need to keep the key in the garage while I'm washing the X3 in the driveway. If I forget and leave the key in my pocket, the lock/unlock goes crazy.
