Constant False Laser Warnings on V1

I hardwired my V1 and was met with constant false laser warnings as soon as I plugged it in.

A bit of research yielded similar issues with the newer BMWs. Some point to the iDrive 6 screen, others state it is PDC, others stated another cause.

Has anyone experienced this issue and found a solution?

I turned off laser warnings for now, but would like to have them enabled if I can.

i have an older passport radar detector and it seems like the pdc sets it off sometimes... the newer models ignore those signals. i get laser alerts sometimes when i turn on my car (in my garage)

It is the gesture control.
I removed mine, but I believe you should be able to code it off.

Thanks. There was discussions of cameras on the i6screen. I didn’t see them under quick inspection but maybe I’ll look harder and use electrical tape to test as some have done.

I’ll also look at bummer code but I don’t remember seeing that as an option. Perhaps it’s an expert mode thing.

Gesture control camera is in the overhead console according to the manual.

Correct. Its gesture control. I have a new escort passport and every time I moved my hand to do a gesture control I got a laser alert on the RD. For the escort radar detector it was reported to the R&D Dept. and they released a firmware update that GC no longer sets off the RD. Its back to normal as it should be. Good luck with the V1.

My Uniden R3 doesn't seem to be affected by the gesture control i.e. no issue.

I get more false alarms on the KBand with Hondas and Acuras

Interesting. The laser alerts on mine were constant even with me perfectly still.

It seemed I was able to stop them by putting my hand under the detector so I ghetto rigged something attached with tape which covered the bottom but no luck.

Turn laser off. It's useless, if you're actually getting hit with laser, it's too late. Laser is direct so it's not going to go off unless it's on you.

It picks up reflections as well, no?

But you’re right, the times I was hit with laser the warning was pretty much “you just got a ticket!”

I’m going to start using Waze along with the radar on longer trips. I’ve had good luck with PoPo warnings with that app. Just gotta watch my data plan.

Hmmm, I dont have my manual handy. I just remember a graphic or text showing/saying it was up there. I made a mental note because I thought it odd. Come to think of it, I think its a graphic.

Do you have DAP optioned?

I have the parking assistant but not the option for stop and go traffic.

I don’t know I’ll ever use it because I’m always on a corner spot away from everyone else.

It is too late, however its nice to know, so you can slow down and let the police catch up easier.

Correct, light refraction through the windshield can set it off as well.

I had V1 with same issue. sold it on eBay and replaced with escort max360.

Very happy with new detector...screens out known false warnings and auto updates over wifi. pretty nice feature.

I did some research on this detector. Seems like they have come a long way especially since V1’s patent ran out on the 360 laser.

Thanks for the tip.

Fixed!

In another thread someone did a video where the creator showed the gesture control LED setting off the laser warnings.

I used 3 overlapping strips of felt/fleece tape to block the gesture control and it resolved the issue! No more constant false laser warnings on my V1.

I was using the video feature on my iPhone (which picks up the LED) to see how many layers it took to completely block it. 3 was the magic number.

I did this on a hot day in a rush so it is not too pretty - I'll cut some more square pieces to make it look nicer when I get some time. I suppose a black vinyl sticker would accomplish the same.

This particular tape seems to hold up well - it hasn't moved in some pretty hot conditions. The fleece tape is awesome for wire looms and leaves no residue so good to have around - basically anywhere you would use electrical tape you can use this stuff.

Since I already had the tape it was a free fix that took 1 minute...I'll spend 3 more minutes making it look nice

I did this and just used a wide black electrical tape and cut it to match the plastic.

That would do it as well. My issue with electrical tape is the sticky residue and pealing off in the heat.
