The only thing I can find to dislike here is the assumed price. Going to pay a premium for the M40i and then have to add tons of stuff like adaptive suspension, the fancy headlights, the digital dash with fancy HUD, adaptive cruise, etc. Gonna be hard to convince my wife to buy a $65k car...

Maybe they don't consider the Macan Turbo a competitor to the M40i because of it's price?

The similarly priced Macan S gets to 60 in 5.4s

Still, 4.6s to 60 in a small SUV is damn fast.

welcome to the new BMW. they are doing the same with the next G20. You will not be able to get a regular 340/440. it will only be the M340/M440.

Because the G01 has grown, its basically the size of the old X5. So with that comes X5 pricing. I cant imagine what the X7 pricing will be ($100K+ easily) and it'll probably have the same n20 in it to start as the base.

Looks good.Happy to see that BMW is releasing a new design that doesn't have the headlights going right into the grille.I have never been a fan of that design on a bunch of the current BMW models.Hopefully they got the steering feel and handling right on the M40i.It is the right size and has a great engine, which should make it a very fun SUV to drive.

Very handsome SAV, I actually think the xLine model is better looking the M40i is just too busy in front, but I guess that's what people that like the M trim like, with all the busy logos splashed throughout the whole vehicle.

Yes. The *35i moniker is being retired from 6 cylinder duty completely. In the near future it will resurface with an M added for UKL M performance vehicles with the soon-to-be unveiled high output B48 relative.

I don't necessarily disagree, but the market has spoken. Audi has done the same thing with the gap between their A* and S* midrange products, and Mercedes now has *300 and *43. There is no more tweener 6 cylinder model. What they could do is offer a 300hp-ish four cylinder option to fill the gap, but so far that hasn't happened (well, Volvo is all four cylinder now - so they are actually doing this). In the future we may see entries like that from the Germans, but for right now you get the I4, the 6 cylinder, and then the super-duper 6 cylinder (V8 in Mercedes case, for now) from M/AMG/Audi-Sport-RS.

Looks like the seats thatīs in the F48, hope not. Overall, a great upgrade, look a bit high, narrow and small headlights. but i think it will grow on me. the interior looks excellent.

Just to go Apples to Oranges for a second, C&D tested a Macan S at 4.6 and a GTS at 4.4.

Of course BMW is just listing conservative estimates and the 40i should be quicker than 4.6.

The X4 offers the X28i at $47k and the M40i at $59k, a $12k premium for the M40i version.

This is a substantial increase and for this new X3 I see the same tendency happening. Get stuck with the N20 or get a full blown M40i. With the X3M coming out I see more sense on a X35i version than a M40i. Love the N20 on my wife's 428 but on an X3/X4 is not the ideal engine in my opinion. And the only option being the substantial premium for the M40i version pushes us outside. Not everyone is a hardcore enthusiast that would enjoy everything the M40i trim offers. I think this two options segregates the trims far too much.

After owning BMWs for the past 20+ years, every model release pushes me further and further from the brand as BMW becomes more and more like Audi.
The N55 behind the *35i badge has been retired and replace with the B58 right the way through the model range from the M135i, M235i, 335i ect. All now replaced with 40i

I think the GLC43 and eventual 63 look better exterior and interior wise.

I think that's definitely the case. The X3M, GLC63, and, if they decide to build one, RS Q5, are up against the Macan Turbo.

The X3 M40i, GLC43, SQ5, and Macan GTS are logical competitors given their price-points. Power output across them is extremely similar. I don't think BMW will have trouble against the Audi and Mercedes, but it will be interesting to see if the X3 M40i can genuinely out-accelerate the Macan GTS in the real world.

Well, I agree the GLC63 looks hot, but let's wait for the X3 M to be unveiled later next year (if current info proves correct) before comparing the X3 to the hottest Mercedes model. I think it's going to prove to be a real looker.

So it doesn't come standard with features like dynamic cruise radar, lane change assist, pedestrian detection, etc. that many competitive models have? Wtf BMW? Took you years to make the backup camera standard (mainly because you had to for 2018).

Eh, close I guess, but the Grand Cherokee I drive now is X5 size so I don't mind it. The X3 is a smidge smaller, which is what I prefer. My wife hates driving my Jeep and I'm hoping I can convince her that this slightly smaller, but much more fun to drive SUV is the perfect solution for both of us.

Unfortunately, this answer is also the same price as the base SRT Jeep that I wanted to buy in the first place, but wife said on the price.

It's not a competitor to the Macan Turbo. The upcoming F97 X3M will take on the role for that part of the segment.

the E53 had a wheel base of 111". this is 113" while the outgoing X3 had a wheelbase of 110

as an owner of the previous generation, this looks a ton better.

we switched from our X3 to an X6 about 2 years ago because of the lease deals on the X6 at the time, the interior was so much nicer, the X3 felt very cheap in comparison. I think BMW stepped it up a little, ventilated seats, larger nav screen (and updated dash in general) are very welcome upgrades.

The M40i performance alone puts the X3 back into consideration when our lease is up, those are just amazing numbers.

Sure fully loaded this will be $65K but so is the competition, its not like there aren't cheaper alternatives, but if you want the top performance SUV at under $70K, what else beats this? Personally I don't like the designs of the Mercedes and Audi (liked the old Audi Q5) and the Porsche Macan is more of a X4 competitor when you look at cargo space.

Audi SQ5, Merc GLC43, BMW M40i will be a great comparison for the magazines (as I said above, Macan should go against X4), I have a feeling BMW will win performance wise, cosmetics is always subjective, what we have no clue about yet is handling/steering.

Yup you have Audi S to thank for that. They went that way years ago, now MB has followed with their AMG Sport (Lite). Go and look at the E class. Either you're paying approx 50k for an E300 or 72k plus for an E43, no in between 6 cylinder option. Goes on and on.
