About jerking transmission?

Hi enthuausists,

I have now driven 5k km with my new X3 (g01 30eX, my. 2020). Car has 80k km on the clock. I've been pretty happy with the car overall so far except this.

Car jerks when start movin forward or reversing. Some times it jerks also when transmission changing gear 1 to 2. This occours mostly at freezing degrees and only when the transmission is cold. Transmission turns smooth and normal when it gets warm.

I am suspecting there is something wrong in transmission. Maybe transmission oil level is too low or too high viscosity of oil? Is this a known fault or just one odd BMW feature again? Transmission was not adaptated between me and previous owner.

The auto-hold on/off or elecric/combustion engine mode nor comfort/sport mode do not make any difference to this symptom.

Any suggestions?

Mine does the same when cold, independent of mode setting, just as yours. It’s not as smooth as the ZF8 speed in my disposed 3 Series that felt seamless. It does improve noticeably when it warms up but still not as good as the old ZF8.

Do you mean clearances or fluid level of differential? Front or rear? Why would the jerking disappear when the differential warms up?

I just spoke with my SA about this and the comparison to my 3 Series. Same transmission, he said, but different programming for reasons he cannot explain. He said I was far from the first X3 owner to complain so it does appear to be inherent. He has already been hoping a future update will address this.

EDIT: I also called the BMW "Share your Thoughts" phone center at 1‑855‑269‑3357. They were very interested to take this report and said that they have had other similar complaints. The more calls, the better.

So the main suspect here could be the transmission software? I don't even know which gearbox is in my car. Can I find the type of gearbox and its software with e.g. VIN code somewhere?

It's the ZF 8 speed I was told, same as what was in my prior 330iX GT. I don't know how to identify it further, sorry.

This contributes to the lurchy cold start behavior.

As to the generally more pronounced shifts even once warm, the next time my car is in, they will wipe out all the existing adaptations and attempt to "teach" it to behave more acceptably.
