No Reverse No Drive

Hi Guys,

Have got a 2008 bmw x3 with auto transmission that developed fault of not moving. the car was climbing a hill when this happened. when the car is on neutral i can push it forward. there is a low noise when put into drive or reverse and a louder noise when put into park.
Has anyone had this issue before and any advice will be appreciated.

The first thing to check is transmission fluid level. However that is a pain to do.
