P0012 has me stumped for sure

08 X3, 160k miles.

So I have had a P0012 and SES light on for some time. I have replaced the VANOS solenoids, the cam position sensors, and the oil/oil filter. If I read and reset the code, all is fine, no SES, no code. The first time I start the car, the SES is off, and stays off even if I drive for hours. But consistently on the second start, the light comes on and the code is back. But even with the SES on the car drives and idles fine, and gas mileage is normal.

I have removed the new solenoids two or three times and cleaned them and bench tested them. Piston moves.

Any suggestions on what to do next? Other than putting some black tape over the SES light?

Thanks!

Did you ever find out what was causing your issue(p0012)?
