Winter tires
I have a 2014 BMW X3 335 Msport
I am in need of winter tires and wondering what tire and rim sizes are available. Can I use 17 inch tire/rims on this car? any thoughts on replica rims vs OEM? |

Yes you can, 17" were standard issue on this car.
I think you can even do 16"... Just make sure the offset is right so there's no rubbing on the shocks/brakes. I run stock sizes for my vehicle (245/50 18) because I mount them on the same rims. You can go narrower if you'd like as well. Cheers |

all F25/F26 models received the same brake set up regardless of engine specification, so 18s were standard in Canada, and 17s were the base offering in the US. I think the only exception to this may have been the X4 M40i which may have come with larger brakes.

^ This. Its just a X3 35i. 335 would refer to the 3 series cars. But as others have mentioned 17's should be fine. I personally really like the Nokian winter tires as I just finally put my winter tires on for the season since the weather looks to finally be in winter mode here.

I would check local boards first like Craigslist etc, you can buy used wheels and tires from various places like Tirerack and their competitors, or lastly get takeoff OEM wheels and get tires locally. I would recommend 17" non runflats. Dealer prices make no sense really. More and more I would look for a good deal in the top five tires in a segment (they are all really good now). Winter tires are only on when the temperature is below 50 F and that get beat up anyway. Lastly some local tire shops will store your tires and mount them if you buy them there. That is pretty convenient.

Depending on how fastidious you might be, but an inexpensive source of OE 17" wheels is from the older model X5's They are the correct offset, bore, bolt pattern and can be had for less than $100 each. They are abundant on Craigslist here in the US and have the added advantage of being only 7.5 inches wide. Remember narrower tires work best in snow. Currently, I am using inexpensive 225/60-17 General Altimax Arctic winter tires that are just fine in the snowbelt where I live. BTW, 16" wheels will NOT work as they will not clear the X3's front and rear calipers.
I mention fastidious, because winter here is roads full of salt and sand, so one doesn't labor over the looks of his/her car. Therefore, I never saw much point in spending alot on new winter wheels for a vehicle that may go months without washing. |

We run 17" winter (after market) rims...no problems at all...standing up well...just added our second set of winters to them...
Lots of pot hole protection...compared to the 19" inch All Season that just came off... |

Just put Nokian or Continental there. Best winter Tyres. Those two are always in the top in winter tyre tests here in the Nordics.
Btw. It was Nokian who invented winter Tyres. And I am glad to see that "all season" Tyres are used less and People understand the need for separate set for summer and winter. |

Is the use of winter tires required by law in Finland? Here it's optional, but those living in snowy regions quickly realize how useful they can be - especially for stopping at icy intersections. Installed mine last Thursday and woke up today to 6 inches of snow. Agree with your preference for Continentals and currently using WinterContact Si's on my 5 series and General (Gislavad) on my X3. As for the latter, General and Gislavad are brands owned by Continental.

Yes, here you must have winter tyres between Dec-Feb. And studded tyres are allowed Nov-Apr (about, the last day to studded be allowed is officially: next sunday after Easter sunday which is really funny law).
Of course non-studded winter tyres are allowed always. I usually have winter set-up from mid Nov till mid Apr. |

Most states have slightly different rules regarding the calendar for use of studded winter tires, but I generally use standard winter tires for the same months you do. Our winters have a lot of snow and freezing temperature, but not the extreme cold of Finland (away from the Baltic). Therefore, they vary from snow covered to bare many times over the course of winter. Consequently, studded tires would be noisy especially at higher speeds and, in most cases, not a good choice. Having visited extremely cold places like Mongolia, I've noticed that roads there often acquire a thick layer of ice lasting for the entire winter. In that case, clearly one would need studded winter tires.
